On July 19, 2022, Yuzuru Hanyu announced that he had decided to leave competitions and wanted to turn professional. An unsurprising decision, after he competed for three entire Olympic cycles, setting an impressive number of records. But his public activities in these two years are no less impressive.
Medias
The announcement of the transition to professionalism took place in a press conference that lasted almost an hour and was broadcast live on the internet. These two videos contain only part of the press conference, but on YouTube you can activate the English subtitles.
Hanyu later appeared in several television shows. If I’m not forgetting any, those related to the immediate farewell to the competitions were Hodo Station, News Zero and The Never Ending Challenges, and in September there were five appearances on local channels in Sendai or Tohoku.
As important as they are for Hanyu, I leave out almost entirely the activities linked to his sponsors, I simply point out that when he turned professional, confirmed the sponsorship with Ajinomoto, ANA (the collaboration ended in autumn 2023), Citizen, Nishikawa (the collaboration ended in the fall of 2024), Phiten, Sekkisei, Towa Pharmaceutical, and that there is a very close collaboration with TV Asahi. For them he created various videos, photos and audio, some of which went viral.
Over time, several television channels have created special programs focusing on him. I limit myself to quickly recalling his meetings with Shae-Lynn Bourne, with Kohei Uchimura, with Mao Daichi, or the fact that several specials dedicated to the shows in which he was the protagonist were broadcast.
In December 2022 he was a guest on Yuming’s All Night Nippon Gold radio broadcast. At the end of the month Hanyu participated as a judge at Kohaku Uta Gassen for the second time. In January he was a guest of Shinya Kiyozuka on his show Classic TV. In May he was invited by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi to a special edition of Tetsuko’s Room. In August he appeared on Gen Hoshino’s program Ogen-san. In October he was the protagonist of the Switch Interviews together with Koichi Domoto. Instead, a conversation with Shigesato Itoi was released only as a text, with translation also into English.

On December 7, 2023, Hanyu celebrated his birthday on the internet, in the Roppongi Metaverse, together with 35,000 fans.
Beyond figure skating
On September 29, Hanyu participated as a special guest in the celebration ceremony for the fiftieth anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan.
On October 11th the names of the winners of the Kikuchi Kan Prize were announced, and among these names there is also that of Hanyu. Born as a literary prize, it was later also awarded to those who contributed in various ways to spreading Japanese culture. The prize was awarded on December 2, even though Hanyu was unable to be present at the ceremony, for which he made a thank you video, because he was busy with Prologue.
Other awards received by Hanyu are the Grand Prize Google Search Award, the Face of the Year by Yahoo Japan, the Japan PR Award and the Special Achievement Award by the Japan Skating Federation.
In October, Hanyu appeared on the cover of Aera. The photos of the service were taken by Mika Ninagawa. A photo from this service was included in the exhibition Hokusai: Inspiration and Influence which was held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston between March 26 and July 16, 2023 and at the Seattle Art Museum between October 19, 2023 and January 21, 2024.
Some of Hanyu’s costumes, or posters focused on him created during his competitive career, have been displayed in various exhibitions.
In May 2022, the film Beijing 2022, dedicated to the 2022 Olympic Games and featuring Hanyu as one of the protagonists, was distributed worldwide. The film won the Guirlande d’Honneur at the Milano International Sport Movies & TV Festival 2023.
As has been the case for several years, Hanyu continues to be celebrated in the city of Kakuda through tanbo art, with his image created in a rice field using different colored rice plants. In 2023 Hanyu was depicted, next to Sendai founder Date Masamune, in the Notte stellata costume. In 2024 he was depicted skating One Summer’s Day.
In the summer of 2023 Hanyu appeared on the cover of Elle Japan wearing Gucci clothes. The collaboration between the prestigious brands led to the inauguration of Gucci’s Ginza Gallery with the photographic exhibition Yuzuru Hanyu: A Journey Beyond Dreams featured by Elle and two videos, available with English subtitles:
On March 14, 2024, Hanyu was officially named Gucci Brand Ambassador. In addition to appearing on the cover of GQ Japan and recording some audio for Gucci, he was the protagonist of a second exhibition at the Ginza Gallery, In Focus: Yuzuru Hanyu Lensed by Jiro Konami.
Natural disasters
Hanyu participated in 24-Hours TV continuously between 2014 and 2022. In 2022 he performed a perfect version of Introduction and rondo capriccioso.
Over time, several donations made by Hanyu or associations linked to him have been announced. Donations linked to two earthquakes are known, the one in Turkey at the beginning of 2023 and the one which devastated the Noto Peninsula on 1 January 2024, on the western coast of Japan (in this case there were two donations), and to Ice Rink in Sendai.
In December 2022, it was announced that Hanyu would occasionally collaborate with NTV’s News Every with a special broadcast entitled Yuzuru Hanyu, Thoughts I want to convey and dedicated to natural calamities and disaster prevention. The first episode, broadcast on March 13, 2023, was dedicated to the town of Tomioka, evacuated following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The second episode, broadcast on July 5, 2023, focused on Kumamoto prefecture, heavily damaged in 2020 by some landslides caused by heavy rains. The third episode, dedicated to the work of rescuers operating in areas affected by a natural disaster, was broadcast on 15 December 2023. The fourth episode, dedicated to the city of Wajima and the earthquake that devastated the Noto Peninsula on 1 January 2024, was broadcast on July 9, 2024. Sendai
On October 18, 2022, he surprisingly showed up at the Major’s Cup in Sendai, a competition created with the money he donated after winning his second Olympic gold, and skated Parisienne Walkways before the start of the competition.
Hanyu continues to lend his face as an ambassador for the Tour de Tohoku cycling event.
Hanyu has served as the tourism ambassador for the city of Sendai for several years. In this capacity he created a video, also available in the version with English subtitles:
When the city of Sendai decided to renovate the Xebio Arena and turn it into a permanent ice rink, Hanyu expressed his support. He later appeared on the city’s social media to provide information about Sendai and its facilities.

The new video contains two programs, Change, an exhibition program from when he competed in the junior category, and Dreamy Aspiration, a new program choreographed by him. Between the two programs he speaks, and this time his words are accompanied by English subtitles, the recognition that not only Japanese fans, but also international ones, have continued to follow him. Not all videos will be subtitled because subtitles take time, but as much as possible Hanyu tries to make himself understood by everyone. In this video he talks, among other things, about his plan to open a section of his channel reserved for subscribers. He won’t be very active, he has too many commitments to be able to publish something continuously, also because he doesn’t compromise on quality: the videos must be done well, and this takes time. Hanyu explicitly said that we can talk about the membership videos, unless he asks us otherwise. I don’t intend to dwell on all of them, some are simply audio in which he speaks over a still image, with at most one jump placed at the end of the video. The comments are always interesting, but anyone who wants to hear or read them must subscribe. What interests me now are the programs. Among the videos published in the subscribers section there are the versions of Change and Dreamy Aspiration shot from a fixed camera, without any type of editing. Another video related to Prologue, the version of Seimei skated by Hanyu on the first day in Yokohama, is also uploaded in the subscriber section of the channel.

One man show
With Prologue Hanyu inaugurated the concept of one man show on ice. The show took place in two cities, Yokohama and Hachinohe. Initially there were supposed to be two dates per city, the enormous demand for tickets led to the addition of a third in Hachinohe. All shows were sold out, 7,900 spectators per day in the first city, 3,000 per day in the second. An hour and a half of show opened by six minutes of warm-up, something that was previously imaginable for a show, and then programs performed live alternating with videos broadcast on the giant screen, in an original creation that captured the spectators and was appreciated by critics to the point of winning the Grand Prix in the Best Relay Broadcast category of the JSBA Original Program Awards.
Two dates of the show were broadcast live on television in Japan by Asahi and in live viewing in a number of cinemas between 81 (Yokohama 2) and 77 (Hachinohe 3), the other three dates were broadcast deferred by Asahi .

On February 26, 2023, Hanyu interpreted Gift, the first ice event ever held at the Tokyo Dome. The setup was grandiose with two orchestras, including the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, a dance troupe, a giant screen of truly colossal dimensions and remarkable special effects. The direction is by Mikiko, with whom Hanyu began collaborating on Prologue. The show was sold out, with 35,000 people present on Tokyo Dome, another 30,000 in the cinemas and theaters where the live viewing was broadcast, and a live television broadcast in Japan on Disney+ and in the rest of the world on Globe Coding (with subtitles in several languages). The show, excluding the ice-making break, lasted over two hours. The show was later made available worldwide, with subtitles in around thirty languages, on Disney+.

Between 2023 and 2024 Hanyu was the protagonist of one solo-tour, Re_Pray. Initially the show was supposed to take place in three cities, in the end a fourth was added. There are two dates for each city, all the shows were sold out: 14,000 people a day in Saitama, 5,500 in Saga, 7,000 in Yokohama and 5,800 in Rifu. A date in each city was broadcast live in Japan on Asahi and in the rest of the world, with subtitles in multiple languages, on Beyond_Live. The other four dates were broadcast deferred on Asahi. For the dates broadcast live, a live viewing was also organized in a number of theaters between 72 and 130 (also counting some theaters in Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea). No live music or other performers like in Gift, but again Mikiko’s direction for another show of about two hours with projection mapping, various types of effects and a remarkable narration. In addition to Hanyu’s skating, which continues to offer shows with a much higher technical content than that of the competition programs.

Notte stellata
Notte stellata is not a Hanyu show, even though he is the chairperson and without him the show would make no sense. Dedicated to the memory of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, it took place in Rifu’s Sekisui Heim Super Arena, a building that had been temporarily used as a morgue after the earthquake.
The first edition of Notte stellata took place between 10 and 12 March 2023, the second between 8 and 10 March 2024. The small cast is made up of skaters who for different reasons were important for Hanyu or for Tohoku. In addition to Hanyu, they are Violetta Afanasieva, Shae-Lynn Bourne, Jason Brown, Javier Fernandez (only in the second edition), Rika Hongo, Satoko Miyahara, Takahito Mura, Akiko Suzuki and Keiji Tanaka. They were joined in 2023 by the gymnast Kohei Uchimura, in 2024 by the actress Mao Daichi.
On both occasions the show was opened by Hanyu with the program Notte stellata, followed by a group number performed by all the skaters except Hanyu on Twinkling Stars of Hope. The first half of the show, in both editions, was closed by a program in collaboration with the special guest. In 2023 Hanyu performed Conquest of Paradise, a new program choreographed partly by David Wilson and partly by himself, together with Uchimura, who performed on a springboard placed next to one of the short sides of the rink. In 2024 Hanyu performed Carmina Burana, with choreography partly by Shae-Lynn Bourne and partly by Rino Masaki, together with Daichi, who performed on a stage placed next to one of the short sides of the rink. In both cases the second part of the show was opened by a group number performed on the rink by several skaters and on a giant screen by Hanyu. The songs chosen were Dynamite in 2023 and Permission to Dance in 2024. Hanyu returned to the rink towards the end of the show to perform in 2023 Haru yo, koi, in 2024 a new program choreographed by David Wilson, Danny Boy. The show concluded with a group number to Song of Hope, choreographed by David Wilson.
Notte stellata was sold out on all dates, 6,000 spectators per day in 2023, 6,100 in 2024. All dates were broadcast live in Japan on Hulu and in live viewing in a number of theaters varying between 62 and 82.

Other shows
Between March 30 and April 10, 2023, Hanyu participated in the 10 dates of the Stars on Ice Japan tour. The tour visited three cities, with three shows in the first two cities and four in the last. Hanyu performed three different programs: The Phantom of the Opera on the first day in each city, Ashura-chan on the second (and in the last day of the tour), and One Summer’s Day on the third. As for the opening number, All These Things that I’ve Done, Hanyu skated the first minute alone, with choreography created by him.
Between May and June 2023 Hanyu participated in Fantasy on Ice, skating in the initial and final group numbers and performing one program. During the six dates of the tour A he interpreted a new program choreographed by himself, If…, with Issa and Kimi of Da Pump who performed live. During the six dates of the tour, B he interpreted another new program choreographed by him, Glamorous Sky, together with Mika Nakashima, who performed live. On the last date, in homage to Johnny Weir, who had announced his farewell to the show, he proposed an encore on the Otoñal step sequence not as he had performed it for a season and a half but in Weir’s version.
In 2024 Hanyu returned to Fantasy on Ice, this time only for the six dates of Tour A. Apart from the initial and final numbers, he performed two programs, Danny By and Meteor, the latter an original choreographed by him and presented together with T.M. Revolution, who performed live.
Publications
For all the shows Hanyu created various types of merchandising and at least one photo book. Other photo books have been done by photographers who regularly follow him, but there are so many that I have lost count (and I have certainly forgotten many other things). Show photo books are nice, but to a certain extent they are “normal” publications, in the sense that there is nothing surprising about publishing a photo book about a show. The most interesting ones in my opinion are Gift, the book illustrated by Clamp, and the Player Guide for Re_Pray. Two shows, Prologue and Gift, also have their own DVD/Blu ray version without subtitles (there are currently no known hypotheses of creating international versions). Books have also been made of Notte stellata, as well as the DVD/Blu ray of the 2023 edition.
Two other books are important: Aoi Honoo III and IV, the third and fourth parts of his autobiography, available only in Japanese. As with the previous volumes, also in this case Hanyu decided to donate his royalties to charity.
In conclusion…
In two years Hanyu has participated in countless television programmes, participated in I don’t know how many advertisements for his sponsors, published several books, created three innovative shows, conceived filmed and edited several videos for his YouTube channel and skated live (also if sometimes the number of people present was limited, or there was no television) on 51 occasions:

As for the technical elements, maybe sooner or later I will decide to count them. It’s clear that Hanyu couldn’t care less about the competition rules, as he breaks them whenever he wants, because his focus is on the artistic aspect of the programs. Il 19 luglio 2022 Yuzuru Hanyu ha annunciato di aver deciso di lasciare le gare e di voler passare al professionismo. Una decisione non sorprendente, dopo che ha gareggiato per tre interi cicli olimpici stabilendo una quantità di primati impressionante. Ma le sue attività pubbliche di questi due anni non sono da meno.

L’annuncio del passaggio al professionismo è avvenuto in una conferenza stampa durata quasi un’ora e trasmessa in diretta su internet. Questi due video contengono solo una parte della conferenza stampa, ma su Youtube è possibile attivare i sottotitoli in inglese.
Il gruppo Facebook YUZURU HANYU – Italian FB Fan Group ha iniziato un lavoro importante per cercare di analizzare tutti gli aspetti della carriera di Hanyu. Le cose da fare sono ancora tantissime, ma è possibile leggere la traduzione in italiano della Dichiarazione di determinazione fatta da Hanyu quel giorno su questa pagina.
In seguito Hanyu è apparso in diverse trasmissioni televisive. Se non ne sto dimenticando nessuna, quelle legate all’addio alle gare sono state nell’immediato Hodo Station, News Zero e The Never Ending Challenges e in settembre cinque apparizioni su canali locali di Sendai o del Tohoku.
Per quanto per Hanyu siano importanti, tralascio quasi totalmente le attività legate ai suoi sponsor, mi limito a ricordare che nel momento del passaggio al professionismo hanno confermato la loro sponsorizzazione Ajinomoto, ANA (la collaborazione è terminata nell’autunno del 2023), Citizen, Nishikawa (la collaborazione è terminata nell’autunno del 2024), Phiten, Sekkisei, Towa Pharmaceutical, e che c’è una collaborazione molto stretta con TV Asahi. Per loro ha realizzato video, foto e audio vari, alcuni dei quali sono diventati virali.
Nel corso del tempo diversi canali televisivi hanno realizzato trasmissioni speciali incentrate su di lui. Mi limito a ricordare rapidamente suoi incontri con Shae-Lynn Bourne, con Kohei Uchimura, con Mao Daichi, o il fatto che sono stati trasmessi diversi speciali dedicati agli show di cui è stato protagonista.
Nel dicembre del 2022 è stato ospite della trasmissione radio di Yuming All Night Nippon Gold. Alla fine del mese Hanyu ha partecipato per la seconda volta come giudice al Kohaku Uta Gassen. In gennaio è stato ospite di Shinya Kiyozuka nella sua trasmissione Classic TV. In maggio è stato invitato da Tetsuko Kuroyanagi in un’edizione speciale della Tetsuko’s Room. In agosto è apparso nel programma Ogen-san di Gen Hoshino. In ottobre è stato protagonista della Switch Interview insieme a Koichi Domoto. È stata invece diffusa solo come testo, con traduzione anche in inglese, una sua conversazione con Shigesato Itoi.

Il 7 dicembre 2023 Hanyu ha festeggiato il suo compleanno su internet, nel Metaverso Roppongi, insieme a 35.000 fan.
Oltre il pattinaggio
Il 29 settembre Hanyu ha partecipato come ospite speciale alla cerimonia di celebrazione per i cinquant’anni della normalizzazione dei rapporti diplomatici fra Cina e Giappone.
L’11 ottobre sono stati annunciati i nomi dei vincitori del Kikuchi Kan Prize, e fra questi nomi c’è anche quello di Hanyu. Nato come un premio letterario, in seguito è stato assegnato anche a coloro che hanno contribuito in vario modo a diffondere la cultura giapponese. Il premio è stato consegnato il 2 dicembre, anche se Hanyu non ha potuto essere presente alla cerimonia, per la quale ha realizzato un video di ringraziamento, perché era impegnato con Prologue.
Altri premi ricevuto da Hanyu sono il Grand Prize Google Search Award, il Face of the Year di Yahoo Giappone, il Japan PR Award e lo Special Achievement Award della Japan Skating Federation.
In ottobre Hanyu è comparso sulla copertina di Aera. le foto del servizio di cui è stato protagonista sono state realizzate da Mika Ninagawa. Una foto di questo servizio è stata inserita nella mostra Hokusai: Inspiration and Influence che si è tenuta al Museum of Fine Arts di Boston fra il 26 marzo e il 16 luglio 2023 e nel Seattle Art Museum fra il 19 ottobre 2023 e il 21 gennaio 2024.
Alcuni costumi di Hanyu, o manifesti incentrati su di lui realizzati durante la sua carriera agonistica sono stati esposti all’interno di diverse mostre.
Nel maggio del 2022 il film Beijing 2022, dedicato ai Giochi olimpici del 2022 e avente in lui uno dei protagonisti, è stato distribuito a livello mondiale. Il film ha vinto la Guirlande d’Honneur al Milano International Sport Movies & TV Festival 2023.
Come avviene da diversi anni, Hanyu continua a essere celebrato nella città di Kakuda attraverso l’arte tanbo, con la sua immagine realizzata in un campo di riso grazie all’utilizzo di piante di riso dai colori diversi. Nel 2023 Hanyu è stato raffigurato, vicino al fondatore di Sendai Date Masamune, con il costume di Notte stellata. Nel 2024 è stato raffigurato mentre interpreta One Summer’s Day.
Nell’estate del 2023 Hanyu è apparso sulla copertina di Elle Japan con indosso abiti Gucci. La collaborazione fra le prestigiose firme ha portato all’inaugurazione della Ginza Gallery di Gucci con la mostra fotografica Yuzuru Hanyu: A Journey Beyond Dreams featured by Elle e a quella di due video, disponibili con sottotitoli in inglese:
Il 14 marzo 2024 Hanyu è stato ufficialmente nominato Brand Ambassador di Gucci. Oltre a essere apparso sulla copertina di GQ Japan e ad aver registrato alcuni audio per Gucci, è stato protagonista di una seconda mostra alla Ginza Gallery, In Focus: Yuzuru Hanyu Lensed by Jiro Konami.
Calamità naturali
Hanyu ha partecipato a 24-Hours TV ininterrottamente fra il 2014 e il 2022. Nel 2022 ha interpretato una versione perfetta di Introduzione e rondò capriccioso.
Nel corso del tempo sono state annunciate diverse donazioni fatte da Hanyu o da associazioni collegate a lui. Sono note donazioni legate a due terremoti, quello in Turchia dell’inizio del 2023 e quello che il 1 gennaio del 2024 ha devastato la Penisola di Noto, sulla costa occidentale del Giappone (in questo caso le donazioni sono state due), e all’Ice Rink di Sendai.
Nel dicembre del 2022 è stato annunciato che Hanyu avrebbe collaborato occasionalmente con News Every di NTV con una trasmissione speciale intitolata Yuzuru Hanyu, Thoughts I want to convey e dedicata alle calamità naturali e alla prevenzione dai disastri. Il primo episodio, trasmesso il 13 marzo 2023, è stato dedicato alla cittadina di Tomioka, evacuata in seguito all’incidente della centrale nucleare di Fukushima Daiichi. Il secondo episodio, trasmesso il 5 luglio 2023, è stato incentrato sulla prefettura di Kumamoto, nel 2020 fortemente danneggiata da alcune frane provocate dalle forti piogge. Il terzo episodio, dedicato al lavoro dei soccorritori che operano nelle aree colpite da una calamità naturale, è stato trasmesso il 15 dicembre 2023. Il quarto episodio, dedicato alla città di Wajima e al terremoto che il 1 gennaio 2024 ha devastato la Penisola di Noto, è stato trasmesso il 9 luglio 2024. Sendai
Il 18 ottobre 2022 a sorpresa si è presentato alla Major’s Cup di Sendai, una gara creata con i soldi da lui donati dopo aver vinto il secondo oro olimpico, e ha pattinato Parisienne Walkways prima dell’inizio della gara.
Hanyu continua a prestare il suo volto come ambasciatore dell’evento di ciclismo Tour de Tohoku.
Da diversi anni Hanyu ricopre il ruolo di ambasciatore per il turismo della città di Sendai. In questa veste ha realizzato un video, disponibile anche nella versione con sottotitoli in inglese:
Nel momento in cui la città di Sendai ha deciso di rinnovare la Xebio Arena e di trasformarla in una pista del ghiaccio permanente Hanyu ha espresso il suo sostegno. In seguito è apparso nei social media della città per fornire informazioni su Sendai e le sue strutture.

Il nuovo video contiene due programmi, Change, un suo programma di esibizione fin fa quando gareggiava nella categoria junior, e Dreamy Aspiration, un programma nuovo coreografato da lui. Fra i due programmi parla, e stavolta le sue parole sono accompagnate da sottotitoli in inglese, il riconoscimento che non solo i fan giapponesi, ma anche quelli internazionali, hanno continuato a seguirlo. Non tutti i video saranno sottotitolati perché per i sottotitoli serve tempo, ma per quanto possibile Hanyu cerca di farsi capire da tutti. In questo video parla, fra l’altro, del suo progetto di aprire una sezione del suo canale riservata agli abbonati. Non sarà molto attivo, ha troppi impegni per poter pubblicare spesso qualcosa, anche perché lui sulla qualità non transige: i video devono essere fatti bene, e questo richiede tempo. Hanyu ha detto esplicitamente che possiamo parlare dei video che si trovano nella sezione per abbonati, a meno che non è lui a chiederci il contrario. Io non intendo soffermarmi su tutti, alcuni sono semplicemente audio in cui parla sopra un’immagine fissa, con al massimo un salto posto alla conclusione del video. I commenti sono sempre interessanti, ma chi li vuole ascoltare o leggere si deve abbonare. Quelli che mi interessano ora sono i programmi. Fra i video pubblicati nella sezione per abbonati ci sono le versioni di Change e di Dreamy Aspiration riprese da una telecamera fissa, senza alcun tipo di editing. Solo show
Con Prologue Hanyu ha inaugurato il concetto di solo show (su ghiaccio). Lo show si è svolto in due città, Yokohama e Hachinohe. Inizialmente sarebbero dovute essere due date per città, l’enorme richiesta di biglietti ne ha fatta aggiungere una terza a Hachinohe. Tutti gli spettacoli hanno fatto registrare il tutto esaurito, 7.900 spettatori al giorno nella prima città, 3.000 al giorno nella seconda. Un’ora e mezza di spettacolo aperti da sei minuti di riscaldamento, qualcosa che in precedenza era immaginabile per uno show, e poi programmi interpretati dal vivo alternati a video trasmessi sul megaschermo, in una creazione originale che ha catturato gli spettatori e che è stata apprezzata dalla critica al punto da vincere il Grand Prix nella categoria Best Relay Broadcast della JSBA Original Program Awards.
Due date dello show sono state trasmesse in diretta televisiva in Giappone da Asahi e in livewieving in un numero di sale cinematografiche compreso fra le 81 (Yokohama 2) e le 77 (Hachinohe 3), le altre tre date sono state trasmesse in differita da Asahi.

Il 26 febbraio 2023 Hanyu ha interpretato Gift, il primo evento su ghiaccio mai svoltosi al Tokyo Dome. L’allestimento è stato grandioso con due orchestre, fra cui la Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, un corpo di ballo, uno schermo gigante di dimensioni davvero colossali ed effetti speciali notevoli. La regia è di Mikiko, con cui Hanyu aveva iniziato a collaborare in Prologue. Lo show ha fatto registrare il tutto esaurito, 35.000 persone presenti sul posto, altre 30.000 circa nelle sale cinematografiche e teatrali in cui è stato trasmesso il livewieving, e una diretta televisiva in Giappone su Disney+ e nel resto del mondo su Globe Coding (con sottotitoli in diverse lingue). Lo show, al netto della pausa di rifacimento del ghiaccio, è durato oltre due ore. In seguito lo show è stato reso disponibile in tutto il mondo, con sottotitoli in una trentina di lingue, su Disney+.

Fra il 2023 e il 2024 Hanyu è stato protagonista di un solo tour, Re_Pray. Inizialmente lo show si doveva svolgere in tre città, alla fine ne è stata aggiunta una quarta. Si tratta di due date per ogni città, tutti gli show hanno fatto registrare il tutto esaurito: 14.000 persone al giorno a Saitama, 5.500 a Saga, 7.000 a Yokohama e 5.800 a Rifu. Una data in ciascuna città è stata trasmessa in diretta in Giappone su Asahi e nel resto del mondo, con sottotitoli in diverse lingue, su Beyond_Live. Le altre quattro date sono state trasmesse in differita su Asahi. Per le date trasmesse in diretta è stato organizzato anche un livewiewing in un numero di sale compreso fra le 72 e le 130 (contando anche alcune sale a Hong Kong, Taiwan e Corea del Sud). Niente musica dal vivo o altri performer come in Gift, ma nuovamente la regia di Mikiko per un altro spettacolo di circa due ore con projection mapping, effetti di vario tipo e una narrazione notevole. Oltre al pattinaggio di Hanyu, che continua a proporre show dal contenuto tecnico molto superiore rispetto a quello dei programmi di gara.

Notte stellata
Notte stellata non è uno show di Hanyu, anche se lui ne è il principale protagonista e senza di lui lo show non avrebbe senso. Dedicato alla memoria del terremoto del Tohoku del 2011, si è svolto nella Sekisui Heim Super Arena di Rifu, un edificio che dopo il terremoto era stato temporaneamente usato come obitorio.
La prima edizione di Notte stellata si è svolta fra il 10 e il 12 marzo 2023, la seconda fra l’8 e il 10 marzo 2024. Il piccolo cast è composto da pattinatori che per motivi diversi sono stati importanti per Hanyu o per il Tohoku. Si tratta, oltre a Hanyu, di Violetta Afanasieva, Shae-Lynn Bourne, Jason Brown, Javier Fernandez (solo nella seconda edizione), Rika Hongo, Satoko Miyahara, Takahito Mura, Akiko Suzuki e Keiji Tanaka. A loro si sono affiancati nel 2023 il ginnasta Kohei Uchimura, nel 2024 l’attrice Mao Daichi.
In entrambe le occasioni lo show è stato aperto da Hanyu con il programma Notte stellata, seguito da un numero di gruppo interpretato da tutti i pattinatori tranne Hanyu su Twinkling Stars of Hope. La prima metà dello show, in entrambe le edizioni, è stata chiusa da un programma in collaborazione con l’ospite speciale. Nel 2023 Hanyu ha interpretato Conquest of Paradise, un programma inedito coreografato in parte da David Wilson e in parte da lui stesso, insieme a Uchimura, che si è esibito su una pedana collocata al fianco di uno dei lati corti della pista. Nel 2024 Hanyu ha interpretato Carmina Burana, con coreografia in parte di Shae-Lynn Bourne e in parte di Rino Masaki, insieme a Daichi, che si è esibita su un palco collocato al fianco di uno dei lati corti della pista. In entrambi i casi la seconda parte dello show è stata aperta da un numero di gruppo interpretato in pista da diversi pattinatori e su un megaschermo da Hanyu. I brani scelti sono stati Dynamite nel 2023 e Permission to Dance nel 2024. Hanyu è tornato in pista verso la fine dello show per interpretare nel 2023 Haru yo, koi, nel 2024 un programma inedito coreografato da David Wilson, Danny Boy. Lo show è stato concluso con un numero di gruppo su Song of Hope, coreografato da David Wilson.
Notte stellata ha fatto registrare il tutto esaurito in tutte le date, 6.000 spettatori al giorno nel 2023, 6.100 nel 2024. Tutte le date sono state trasmesse in diretta in Giappone su Hulu e in liveviewing in un numero di sale variabile fra le 62 e le 82.

Fra il 30 marzo e il 10 aprile 2023 Hanyu ha partecipato alle 10 date del tour giapponese di Stars on Ice. Il tour ha toccato tre città, con tre show nelle prime due città e quattro nell’ultima. Hanyu ha interpretato tre programmi diversi: Il fantasma dell’Opera il primo giorno in ogni città, Ashura-chan il secondo (e l’ultimo giorno del tour) e One Summer’s Day il terzo. Quanto al numero iniziale, All These Things that I’ve Done, Hanyu ha pattinato da solo il primo minuto, con coreografia ideata da lui.
Fra maggio e giugno del 2023 Hanyu ha partecipato a Fantasy on Ice, pattinando nei numeri di gruppo iniziale e finale e interpretando un programma a show. Nelle sei date del tour A ha proposto un inedito coreografato da lui stesso, If…, con Issa e Kimi dei Da Pump che si sono esibiti dal vivo. Nelle sei date del tour B ha proposto un altro inedito coreografato da lui, Glamorous Sky, insieme a Mika Nakashima, che si è esibita dal vivo. Nell’ultima data, in omaggio a Johnny Weir, che aveva annunciato il suo addio allo show, ha proposto un bis sulla sequenza di passi di Otoñal non come l’aveva portata lui in gara per una stagione e mezza ma nella versione di Weir.
Nel 2024 Hanyu è tornato a Fantasy on Ice, stavolta solo per le sei date del Tour A. A parte i numeri iniziali e finali ha interpretato due programmi, Danny By e Meteor, quest’ultimo un inedito coreografato da lui e presentato insieme a T.M. Revolution, che si è esibito dal vivo.
Pubblicazioni
Per tutti gli show Hanyu ha fatto realizzare merchandising di vario tipo e almeno un libro fotografico. Altri libri fotografici sono stati realizzati da fotografi che lo seguono abitualmente, ma sono così tanti che ho perso il conto (e sicuramente ho dimenticato tante altre cose). I libri fotografici degli show sono belli, ma entro certi limiti sono pubblicazioni “normali”, nel senso che non c’è nulla di sorprendente nella pubblicazione di un libro fotografico su uno spettacolo. Quelli secondo me più interessanti sono Gift, il libro illustrato dalle Clamp, e la Player Guide di Re_Pray. Due show, Prologue e Gift, hanno anche la loro versione in DVD/Blu ray senza sottotitoli (al momento non sono note ipotesi di realizzare versioni internazionali). Anche di Notte stellata sono stati realizzati libri, oltre che il DVD/Blu ray dell’edizione del 2023.
Altri due libri sono importanti: Aoi Honoo III e IV, la terza e la quarta parte della sua autobiografia, disponibile solo in giapponese. Come per i volumi precedenti, anche in questo caso Hanyu ha deciso di donare le sue royalties in beneficenza.
In conclusione…
In due anni Hanyu ha partecipato a un’infinità di trasmissioni televisive, realizzato non so quante pubblicità per i suoi sponsor, pubblicato diversi libri, ideato tre show innovativi, ideato filmato e montato diversi video per il suo canale YouTube e pattinato dal vivo (anche se qualche volta il numero di persone presenti era limitato, o non c’era la televisione) in 51 occasioni:

Per quanto riguarda gli elementi tecnici, magari prima o poi deciderò di contarli. È evidente che a Hanyu delle regole di gara non potrebbe importare meno, visto che le infrange ogni volta che vuole, perché la sua focalizzazione è sull’aspetto artistico dei programmi. Questo non significa che rinuncia alle difficoltà, in tutti i suoi show ha eseguito numerosi quadrupli. Qualche volta ha commesso degli errori, cosa inevitabile quando si fanno cose difficili, ma se Re_Pray contiene circa tre quarti d’ora di pattinaggio, con 5 o 6 quadrupli (in The Darkness of Eternity ci sono 4S, 4T e combinazione 4T+1Eu+3S+1Eu+3S, nel warm up credo che a volte abbia fatto due, a volte tre quadrupli), non so quanti 3A e 16 trottole, è evidente che il livello tecnico è altissimo. Però la Zayak rule è stata accantonata fin dal Seimei di Prologue, con i suoi tre 3A, e con Parisienne Walkways alla Major’s Cup, con la combinazione 3A+3T, proibita da anni in un programma corto. Non abbiamo visto il 4Lo negli show, solo nella SharePractice e in qualche video registrato, in cui lo ha eseguito anche in sequenza con un 3A. Se non lo fa negli show, è una scelta che capisco perfettamente e che condivido, anche se non sta a me condividere le sue scelte. È lui che pattina, è lui il suo direttore artistico, le decisioni sono sue. Di fatto, se già altri pattinatori forti erano increduli di fronte alle difficoltà tecniche di Prologue, con gli show successivi Hanyu non ha fatto che continuare ad aumentare le difficoltà tecniche, che superano di gran lunga quelle di una gara, e allo stesso tempo ha scritto tre storie, dimostrando capacità narrative sempre maggiori, e ha raffinato la sua tecnica lavorando su ogni dettaglio. I suoi primi due anni da professionista sono stati straordinari, e non ho dubbi sul fatto che Hanyu troverà modo di sorprenderci ancora.

Yuzuru Hanyu ha creato le Ice Stories come nuovo genere di pattinaggio artistico, evoluzione basata sulla sua perfezione tecnica, sul suo genio creativo e sulla sua poliedricità artistica e di interessi culturali. Tanti mondi che si fondono, esaltandosi a vicenda e trovando nella genialità e nella perfezione atletica di Yuzuru la loro più alta consacrazione. Grazie per questo contributo!
