Figure skating is an individual sport. There are two occasions in which skaters participate in team competitions: the Olympic Team Event and the World Team Trophy. Honestly, I struggle to take these competitions seriously, because among those who can boast an Olympic bronze are Misato Komatsubara/Tim Koleto. Nothing against them as people, but how strong are they as skaters?

Onestamente io fatico a prendere sul serio queste competizioni, perché fra coloro che possono vantare un bronzo olimpico ci sono Misato Komatsubara/Tim Koleto. Nulla contro di loro come persone, ma come pattinatori quanto sono forti?

In 2020 the so-called Grand Prix competitions were local events, on the occasion apart from Komatsubara/Koleto only Rikako Fukase/Eichu Cho and Kana Muramoto/Daisuke Takahashi were present, in their first competition together. They won, but even if they had remained motionless all the time in the center of the rink they couldn’t have been classified as worse than third. It doesn’t seem like a great success to me. Two bronzes in two Challenger Series, never higher than seventh place in major competitions. They can boast an Olympic bronze, these other dancers cannot.

Nel 2020 le cosiddette gare di Grand Prix erano eventi locali, nell’occasione a parte Komatsubara/Koleto erano presenti solo Rikako Fukase/Eichu Cho e Kana Muramoto/Daisuke Takahashi, alla loro prima gara insieme. Hanno vinto, ma anche se fossero rimasti tutto il tempo immobili in centro alla pista peggio di terzi non si potevano classificare. Non mi sembra un gran successo. Due bronzi in due Challenger Series, mai più in alto del settimo posto in gare più importanti. Loro possono vantare un bronzo olimpico, queste altre coppie di danzatori no.

I could also mention Charlène Guignard/Marco Fabbri, winners of a world silver, two golds and two European bronzes and a silver and two bronzes at the GPF, or Piper Gilles/Paul Poirier, winners of two world bronzes, two silvers and a bronze at the 4CC and a gold and a bronze at the GPF, but if they continue these two couples could manage to win an Olympic medal. So I can’t take team competitions seriously, but once a skater participates in a team competition, he has to do his best. Did everyone do their best at the 2021 World Team Trophy?

Potrei citare anche Charlène Guignard/Marco Fabbri, vincitori di un argento mondiale, due ori e due bronzi europei e un argento e due bronzi alla GPF, o Piper Gilles/Paul Poirier, vincitori di due bronzi mondiali, due argenti e un bronzo al 4CC e un oro e un bronzo alla GPF, ma se andranno avanti queste due coppie potrebbero riuscire a vincere una medaglia olimpica. Perciò io non riesco a prendere sul serio le competizioni di squadra, ma una volta che un pattinatore partecipa a una gara a squadre, deve fare del suo meglio. Al World Team Trophy 2021 hanno fatto tutti del loro meglio?

The competition took place in particular conditions, there were a series of restrictions related to the covid, someone in Japan had to quarantine, and I would like to have more precise information on that quarantine, Matteo Rizzo had to give up taking part because he was tested positive to the covid immediately before leaving Italy, and Rika Kihira participated in the competition injured.

La gara si è svolta in condizioni particolari, c’erano una serie di restrizioni legate al covid, qualcuno in Giappone ha dovuto fare la quarantena, e mi piacerebbe avere informazioni più precise su quella quarantena, Matteo Rizzo ha dovuto rinunciare a partecipare perché è risultato positivo al covid subito prima di partire, e Rika Kihira ha partecipato alla gara da infortunata.

The situation after almost two days of competition was this. Komatsubara/Koleto fifth in the RD, Kaori Sakamoto and Kika Kihira third and fourth in the women’s SP, Yuzuru Hanyu and Shoma Uno second and ninth in the men’s SP, Miura/Kihara third in the pairs SP, and finally Komatsubara/Koleto fifth again in the FD. The men’s FS was the last program of the day. Pairs’ and women’s FS would take place the next day.

La situazione dopo quasi due giornate di gara era questa. Komatsubara/Koleto quinti nella RD, Kaori Sakamoto e Kika Kihira terza e quarta nello SP femminile, Yuzuru Hanyu e Shoma Uno secondo e nono nello SP maschile, Miura/Kihara terzi nello SP delle coppie, e infine Komatsubara/Koleto di nuovo quinti nella FD. Mancava il FS maschile. I FS di coppie e donne si sarebbero svolti il giorno dopo.

Uno ninth with 77.46 points? A month earlier at the World Championship he had scored 92.62 points despite a fall in 3A. 92.62 points here would have meant sixth place and not ninth. How did he score so few points?

He did mistakes on all the jumps, losing the combination due to a fall on the first jump, and also did a mistake one of the spins.

It happens. Everyone can have bad days. Making mistakes in four out of seven elements is a lot, but it happens. I guess he felt bad about letting his teammates down and he must have tried his best to make up for it, right? This was a particular season, the WTT was only the second international competition of a certain level in the season, so even if it is not usually an important competition, it was an opportunity to say that skating was moving forward despite the difficulties. Did he do his best?

Capita. Tutti possono avere giornate negative. Fare errori in quattro elementi su sette è tanto, ma capita. Suppongo si sia sentito in colpa per aver deluso i compagni di squadra e avrà provato a fare del suo meglio per rimediare, giusto? Questa era una stagione particolare, il WTT era solo la seconda gara internazionale di un certo livello nella stagione, perciò anche se di solito non si tratta di una gara importante, era un’occasione per dire che il pattinaggio andava avanti nonostante le difficoltà. Avrà fatto del suo meglio?

Hanyu and Uno second and sixth among the men, Miura/Kihara third among the pairs, Sakamoto and Kihira second and fifth among the women, Japan won the bronze just 3 points from the silver, won by the United States. With equal points, the United States would still have won silver, because Chen won his two programs and no Japanese did the same, however the one who brought the least points to Japan, in both programs, was Uno. Komatsubara/Koleto also placed quite low in their rankings, but these were predictable placings, the ones that were surprising were Uno’s placings. We saw how the SP went. And the FS?

Hanyu e Uno secondo e sesto fra gli uomini, Miura/Kihara terzi fra le coppie, Sakamoto e Kihira seconda e quinta fra le donne, Giappone vincitore del bronzo a soli 3 punti dall’argento, vinto dagli Stati Uniti. A pari punti gli Stati Uniti avrebbero comunque vinto l’argento, perché Chen ha vinto i suoi due segmenti di gara e nessun giapponese ha fatto altrettanto, comunque quello che ha portato meno punti al Giappone, in entrambi i segmenti di gara, è stato Uno. Anche Komatsubara/Koleto si sono piazzati abbastanza in fondo alle loro classifiche, ma questi erano piazzamenti prevedibili, quelli che hanno sorpreso sono stati i piazzamenti di Uno. Lo SP abbiamo visto come è andato. E il FS?

Two falls. It happens. What doesn’t happen is the first element. 3A+4T combination. At the moment Uno is the only skater who has presented this combination in competition. He had already tried it once, at the 2019 WTT and on that occasion too he fell.

The problem is that this combination makes no sense. At the World Championships in Stockholm, with four quadruples, Uno had scored 184.82 points. At the World Team Trophy he decided not to do the 4S. Having to redeem from a bad performance in the short program, the only reasonable reason I can think of for not doing the most challenging program he’s capable of doing is that he didn’t feel fit. And if he didn’t feel fit, why did he put in the layout a combination that has never been performed by anyone?

According to the rules, only one quadruple can be repeated. This means that the combination 3A+4T does not give any advantage in terms of points, because it does not allow the skater to make one more quadruple. At most it allows to him to make a 2A instead of the 2T. A minimal difference, and there can be another problem.

Due cadute. Capita. Quello che non capita è il primo elemento. Combinazione 3A+4T. Al momento Uno è l’unico pattinatore che ha presentato questa combinazione in gara. L’aveva già provata una volta, al WTT 2019 e anche in quell’occasione era caduto.

Il problema è che questa combinazione non ha senso. Al Mondiale di Stoccolma, con quattro quadrupli, Uno aveva fatto 184.82 punti. Al World Team Trophy ha deciso di non fare il 4S. Dovendo riscattarsi da una brutta prestazione nel programma corto, l’unico motivo ragionevole che mi viene in mente per non fare il programma più impegnativo che è in grado di fare, è che non si sentiva in forma. E se non si sentiva in forma, perché ha messo nel layout una combinazione che non è mai stata eseguita da nessuno?

Da regolamento può essere ripetuto un solo quadruplo. Questo significa che la combinazione 3A+4T non dà alcun vantaggio in termini di punti, perché non consente di fare un quadruplo in più. Al massimo consente di fare un 2A al posto del 2T. Una differenza minima. E può esserci un altro problema.

The 4T was judged to be underrotated, so Uno actually had a lower BV, not a higher one. He took an unnecessary and enormous risk that harmed him and his team. Two years earlier he had fallen. The combination is difficult. Did he really think that on this occasion he would be able not to fall? And if he thought he could land the combination, why not instead aim for a higher base value, with four quads that he knew for sure he could do because he had already done it? He couldn’t be sure he would skate well, that’s something skaters discover from time to time, but he knew he had completed programs with four quads without errors. He also knew he had never landed the 3A+4T combination in competition, and considering how often he has rotation problems, the risk was enormous.

What would have happened if he had presented a layout like the one I indicated? Let’s imagine that the rest would not have changed, and that he would have performed the 4T+2T combination and the 3A x not well and not badly, GOE 0. Only one point deduction for the only fall, which occurred on the second 4T, and a cap in the components higher. I remember that the table relating to PCS in case of serious errors is this:

Il 4T è stato giudicato sottoruotato, perciò di fatto Uno ha avuto un BV più basso, non più alto. Ha corso un rischio inutile ed enorme che ha danneggiato lui e la sua squadra. Due anni prima era caduto. La combinazione è difficile. Davvero pensava che in quest’occasione sarebbe riuscito a rimanere in piedi? E se pensava di poter rimanere in piedi, perché non puntare invece a un valore base più alto, con quattro quadrupli che sapeva con certezza di potert eseguire perché lo aveva già fatto? Non poteva essere sicuro che avrebbe pattinato bene, quello è qualcosa che i pattinatori scoprono di volta in volta, ma sapeva di aver completato programmi con quattro quadrupli senza errori. La combinazione 3A+4T no, quella non sapeva di averla fatta, e considerando quanto spesso ha problemi di rotazione, il rischio era enorme.

Cosa sarebbe successo se avesse presentato un layout come quello da me indicato? Immaginiamo che il resto non sarebbe cambiato, e che avrebbe eseguito la combinazione 4T+2T e il 3A x non bene e non male, GOE 0. Un solo punto di detrazione per l’unica caduta, avvenuta sul secondo 4T, e tetto nei components più alto. Ricordo che la tabella relativa ai PCS in caso di errori è questa:

Taking the scores given to Uno by the judges as valid, I raised his score by 0.30 points in SS, TR and CO, by 0.50 in PE and IN.

Prendendo per buoni i voti assegnati a Uno dai giudici, ho alzato il suo punteggio di 0.30 punti in SS, TR e CO, di 0.50 in PE e IN.

With a program with a normal layout, three quadruples, maintaining the other errors made by Uno (a fall, a popped jump), and assuming the elements performed without particular qualities but also without particular errors, Uno would have scored over 8 points more. Where would he have finished in the rankings?

Con un programma dal layout normale, tre quadrupli, mantenendo gli altri errori fatti da Uno (una caduta, un salto aperto in volo), e ipotizzando gli elementi eseguiti senza particolari qualità ma anche senza particolari errori, Uno avrebbe fatto oltre 8 punti in più. Dove sarebbe finito in classifica?

Uno would have placed fourth, not sixth. It wouldn’t have been enough to win silver, just as the free skate from Stockholm, which would have allowed him to finish in third place, wouldn’t have been enough.

Uno si sarebbe piazzato al quarto posto, non al sesto. Non sarebbe bastato per vincere l’argento, come non sarebbe bastato il libero di Stoccolma, che gli avrebbe consentito di classificarsi al terzo posto.

In hindsight we know that the ranking would not have changed, but Uno could have tried to help his team win silver. He didn’t do it. He preferred to attempt an element that he knew he would not complete correctly to show off, regardless of what this would mean for his teammates. Nice team spirit!

Con il senno di poi seppiamo che la classifica non sarebbe cambiata, ma Uno avrebbe potuto provare ad aiutare la sua squadra a vincere l’argento. Non lo ha fatto. Ha preferito tentare un elemento che sapeva che non avrebbe completato correttamente per mettersi in mostra, incurante di ciò che questo avrebbe comportato per i suoi compagni di squadra. Bello spirito di squadra!
