Luoghi meravigliosi, tutti quanti. Quanto non abbiamo visto? Tantissimo.
Decine. Nessun disegno, solo poche parole in italiano.
Come avvisano i cartelli, è bene fare attenzione 😀
Ultima notte a Tokyo.
Hanyu—no, Yuzu.
Divertirmi…
In alcuni momenti è stata dura.
Tokyo?
L’orologio si è fermato all’ora dello tsunami.
Tappa obbligata all’Ice rink, dove ho pattinato peggio del solito.

In general, rankings dedicated to the strongest athlete of all time are something to be taken with great caution. There are too many variables for a real comparison to be made. And if the ranking puts together athletes who dedicate themselves to different sports, it is even worse. This time, the one who drew up an impossible ranking was ESPN, which set a time limit, our millennium, but had the pretension of putting together all sports and establishing who the 100 best athletes of the 21st century are.
I have not read the biographies, I do not know what the journalists say about these 100 athletes. I know some of them by reputation, others not, but I have no doubts that they are all giants in their sport. I have doubts about the ranking. Luckily, ESPN created a couple of summary tables on the data that interested me, thus saving me the boring task of doing the counts personally. These are the nations from which the athletes come:
56 United States
5 Spain
4 Canada and Dominican Republic
3 Brazil, France and Japan
2 Germany, Jamaica, Serbia and Sweden
1 Argentina, Australia, Croatia, Great Britain, Greece, India, Northern Ireland, Panama, Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, Switzerland and Venezuela.
Over half are Americans? In a ranking made in the United States? Curious. Only one Russian? (It is Alexander Ovechkin, who has been playing hockey in the United States for twenty years, you would almost think that he is so good that they could not exclude him, and that the fact of playing in the United States has helped him overcome the terrible defect of being Russian.) No Chinese? Just to mention the first two absent or almost absent nations that I noticed.
The other interesting table is the one relating to the sports:
24 basketball
17 baseball
15 soccer
12 football
6 tennis
4 golf, boxing
3 athletics, motor racing, hockey
2 swimming, gymnastics, martial arts
1 skiing, snowboarding, cricket
Of 100 athletes, only 5 are dedicated to a winter sport, 3 to team sports and 2 to individual sports, and this is also remarkable. There is a clear prevalence for team sports, as many as 71 athletes (and this considering as individual sports motor racing, even if the driver could not race if he did not have a team to prepare the car, or athletics and swimming, which also award medals to relays, or even gymnastics, which has a team competition). But the most serious thing is that 68 athletes out of 100 are dedicated to only 4 sports. Over two thirds of the athletes. More than a ranking related to the value of the athletes, it seems to me a ranking based on love of country and the ignorance of journalists: they do not know other sports, so for them the strongest athletes are these. I could be wrong, but this is the impression. Given the ranking, I decided to ignore it.
A few days later, ESPN published another ranking, this time dedicated to the best 25 athletes of the Olympics in the 21st century. I read this one more carefully. There is a passage in one biography that deserves some reflection, but for now I will leave it alone and focus on the lines dedicated to Yuzuru Hanyu.
Positive aspect: Hanyu is in the top 10, a detail not to be taken for granted considering we are talking about an American network. Of the 25 athletes, 11 practice a winter sport, a high percentage considering that the sports that will award a medal at the Summer Games in Paris are 32 (in Tokyo there were 33), while those present at the Winter Games in Beijing were only 7. Those who practice figure skating are two, Hanyu and Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir. I agree with this selection. In my opinion, there are several champions who were left out (no North Americans), but it is right to try to give space to the greatest possible number of sports.
The fact that Hanyu is there is important, it is yet another confirmation that he is not only known in Japan, or only in Asia, and that his importance continues to be recognized even after he left the competitions. The profile, however, is a disaster. They could have used a better photo, but this also applies to other athletes. What is not admissible is the text, opened by an error that remained online for about a day, before someone intervened to correct it. At first ESPN had written that Hanyu is a gymnast then, I suppose thanks to the numerous reports from fans, the oversight was corrected. With the rest, however, things are not better.
At his peak, Hanyu was not so much a figure skater but a rock star.
Not so much a figure skater? Really? If the intention was to say that his fame was comparable to that of a rock star, the concept could have been expressed a little better, because this way it seems like an insult, with the technical aspect of what Hanyu does set aside as if it were insignificant. A comment like this might lead the reader who knows nothing about him to wonder what Hanyu is doing in a list of the best athletes if he is more of an idol than an athlete, especially since the next paragraph is really insipid.
Fans followed him around the world, armed with Winnie the Pooh toys. He was known to carry a Pooh tissue box to competitions and it became a thing.
With all that can be said about Hanyu, is this all they managed to write? A sentence about the fans and one about an absolutely marginal detail that belittles the athlete by reducing him to a childish character? Why not write that three months before his second Olympic gold medal Hanyu suffered a serious ankle injury? For other athletes who suffered injuries shortly before success they have done so, they have praised their ability to recover. For Hanyu, no. And this is not the only important competition Hanyu has faced in precarious physical conditions. The most sensational episode occurred in November 2014, when he was the involuntary protagonist of a frightening collision on the rink and skated a program that, although full of errors, is a monument to his courage. Without forgetting that he has asthma, so right from the start he goes on the rink with a problem that makes everything more difficult for him. And then perhaps there was something else to write, something even more macroscopic.
Hanyu is from Sendai, a city that suffered enormous damage due to the 2011 earthquake. Hanyu is among the lucky ones, the tsunami did not touch him, he had no deaths in his family, but this does not mean that it was not a terrible experience. Since the month after the earthquake, Hanyu has done his best to contribute to the reconstruction. He has donated enormous amounts of money and has been the testimonial for numerous important initiatives. The official channel of the Olympics has dedicated a short video to Hanyu’s story in which the earthquake is remembered:
He hasn’t stopped helping yet. A few days ago, news broke that a charity show was organized, with proceeds going to the Ishikawa Prefecture, which was hit by a devastating earthquake on January 1st of this year. It’s not Tohoku, it’s not an event that affected him directly, but Hanyu saw the difficulties those people are facing and decided to do his best to help.
And the information aren’t even that hard to find. It may not have the latest updates, but the Wikipedia page dedicated to Hanyu (actually there are several pages dedicated to him, and the main page and some of the others are considered quality pages) has a section dedicated to Hanyu’s commitment to reconstruction, so it wasn’t hard to find the information. If by chance some ESPN journalist happens to be around here and finds it too complicated to click on the link, I’ll post the screenshot here. And if the passage seems too long, they can just read the last four lines.
Well, maybe writing about this, about his charitable activities, was a little more important than writing about a stuffed toy.
If they really wanted to talk about fame, they could have talked about the fact that last year, for the first time in history, an ice rink was set up inside the Tokyo Dome and that Hanyu held a show there in front of 35,000 spectators. That crowd was there for him, since it was a solo-show, since there were no other skaters on the rink. That’s what fame is, people who even face intercontinental flights just to see one of his shows. On the last day of the Re_Pray tour, Hanyu said that there were spectators from about thirty nations, demonstrating his ability to communicate with people from all over the world through skating. ESPN could have talked about the fact that his shows have a huge economic impact. But no, instead of talking about serious things, they talk about Winnie the Pooh. A deliberate choice.
Winnie the Pooh then. This is the image that someone is interested in giving of a champion who has won everything in his sport both in the junior and senior categories, who has won the most important medals at least twice, who has set 19 world records, who has faced an impressive amount of injuries. Who when he was 16 was the victim of a natural disaster, who took courage, went on, and from that day on he has done his best to help those in difficulty, to the point of becoming a point of reference for his compatriots, who have awarded him with the People Honor Award, the highest recognition that can be given to a Japanese.
One could talk about his thesis, the importance of which has been recognized by his University, or the innovative shows he has been creating since he turned professional, shows that regularly sell out. But no, apparently according to ESPN there must be a strange cult around Hanyu, venerated like a rock star by childish people who walk around armed with Winnie the Pooh (after all, he is the first to have his own personal Winnie the Pooh) and who are only interested in that not well-defined thing that is art, because according to them
Hanyu wasn’t known for the big jumps that have come to dominate figure skating in recent years.
Okay, let’s clarify things, starting with who Hanyu is. A brief biography of him (not very precise, he holds 19 world records and not 18, and despite having appeared in a film and in several television shows he is not a television or cinema star) can be found on the official Olympics website, so it wasn’t difficult to find:
A few days ago I published a list of what Hanyu has done, here I propose a summary of the main ones. Two Olympic golds, it is right to mention the “back-to-back”, the consecutive victories, but perhaps it could be noted that it had been 66 years since any man had been able to do the same thing. Details are important. If we read the biographies of the others, Michael Phelps won 28 medals, Simone Biles 7 (for now, because she seems well on her way to winning some more), Usain Bolt 8, and I could go on. Hanyu only two. It seems a low number, until we consider that figure skating awards only one medal, two if we consider the team event (when he participated, Hanyu was the best in his phase of the competition, but the team as a whole was not strong enough to win a medal). So the golds may be only two, but in his first two Olympic appearances they are all that Hanyu could win. And Hanyu was the first Asian (and still the only one) to win Olympic gold in the men’s figure skating event. As for the 7 world medals, only Hanyu and one other skater in the post-war period have reached 7, so for figure skating this is also a high number. Among the men, Hanyu was the only one to complete the Super Slam, a detail not mentioned, just as the 19 world records or the 4 golds at the Grand Prix final, a competition as difficult as a World Championship, are not mentioned.
Given the titles, I focus on the jumps, because Hanyu’s skating is a complete skating like never seen before and probably will not be seen again in the future. His ability to interpret music is extraordinary. His spins, his steps, his every movement, are wonderful. Not for some ineffable reason, but because Hanyu has worked tirelessly since he was a child, and is still working tirelessly, to perfect his technique, because the apparent ease of his gestures can only exist thanks to an impeccable technique. Technique that also includes jumps.
The most macroscopic thing, that everyone who writes about figure skating should remember, is that Hanyu was the first skater to do a quadruple loop. This alone should be enough to say that his jumps were extraordinary. They are still extraordinary, even if he no longer performs them in competition. This is the list of the first skaters who landed the most important jumps, in order of execution:
3A (triple axel) Vern Taylor
4T (quadruple toe loop) Kurt Browning
4S (quadruple salchow) Timothy Goebel
4Lz (quadruple lutz) Brandon Mroz
4F (quadruple flip) Shoma Uno
4Lo (quadruple loop) Yuzuru Hanyu
4A (quadruple axel) Ilia Malinin
I included also the triple axel in the list because the axel is a particular jump, closer to jumps that nominally have one more rotation than those that nominally have the same number of rotations. In terms of difficulty, a 3A is much closer to a 4T than to a 3Lz, there are skaters who struggle much more with the 3A than with the quadruples. Nathan Chen probably found 4T, 4S, 4F and 4Lz easier than the 3A, Patrick Chan, who only did one quadruple, but did it really well, was much more sure on the 4T than on the 3A, the same goes for Stephane Lambiel. Also among the women, Alexandra Trusova landed four different types of quadruples, but never managed to complete a 3A with a positive GOE, Anna Shchcerbakova completed the quadruple lutz and the quadruple flip but never attempted a 3A.
This short list is missing two of the great quadruple kings of the last decades, Elvis Stojko and Nathan Chen. Curiously, Hanyu is on the list, but not two of the quadruple kings. They were at most the first to perform a quadruple in combination (Stojko the toe loop, Chen the flip). Of course, this is also important, this is also difficult. Now that I think about it, Hanyu was the first to perform some types of combinations:
3A+1Eu+3S (actually when he first performed the combination the official acronym was 3A+1Lo+3S)
4T+3A+SEQ (Hanyu performed this sequence twice in competition, in the 2018-19 season, after having performed it who knows how many times in shows since he was a teenager, but no one else has performed it in competition yet, and it’s been years since he did it)
4T+1Eu+3F
Not only that, but the construction of Hanyu’s programs also shows his ability in jumps. I can’t swear to it, but I think he was the first to perform two 3A in the second half of a free program. But I know for sure that he was the first to perform three quadruples in the second half of a free program, and for two seasons (then the rules changed, and therefore the construction of the programs) he performed free programs that included three jump elements in the first half and five in the second, and among these five elements two were quadruples (one in combination) and two were triple axel (both in combination). A layout like this cannot be completed by a skater who does not know how to do good jumps.
If ESPN’s sentence had been Hanyu “wasn’t known only for the big jumps” it would have been correct, because Hanyu’s skating is not only made up of jumps (which instead it’s true for some other skater), but written as it is it is a belittling of a good part of what Hanyu did. After all, for ESPN Hanyu was more of a rock star than a skater. But no, the technical aspect of his skating has always been very important.
SkatingScores.com (a very useful site, which provides a lot of information that the ISU should provide, but which the ISU apparently says are not relevant) has a lot of impressive statistics, and I used it to compare the highest technical scores obtained by skaters. I searched for all senior competitions, international and national, which allows you to see also Russian skaters in the last two seasons. Of course, in this way my search finds a much higher score for Hanyu in the 2021-22 season than it would have found if I had excluded the national competitions, but in that season Hanyu participated in only one international competition, and in both programs he was damaged by unfortunate circumstances, so those scores do not indicate his real value. And I used the same setting for everyone, even though the US federation has the bad habit of greatly inflating the scores of its athletes, something I had wrote on almost three years ago, so much so that in some cases Hanyu obtained higher scores than Chen if we only look at the international competitions, but lower if we also check the national championship.
I didn’t check all the seasons, but in these two cases Chen preceded Hanyu thanks to a score obtained at the National Championship. I highlighted with the green oval how in both cases Chen’s base value at the National Championship was lower than that of the best international competition, but thanks to higher GOE and PCS he obtained a higher total score. No, they don’t inflate them at all, the scores.
I couldn’t set the search only on jumps, so what I did was a check on the five highest TES in all the seasons since the ISU Judging System exists.
I highlighted Hanyu in yellow. Since he started appearing in this table, in the 2011-12 season (he was between 16 and 17 years old, it was his second senior season), and until the end of his competitive career, he has never left it. He has always obtained very high scores, so in all seasons, in both programs he has been among the best skaters in terms of technique.
How many years has Hanyu been among the best? I have put the data of those who appear in the table at least five times in another table. Hanyu is the skater who has been very strong in terms of technique for the longest period of time.

Evgeni Plushenko competed for several seasons with the 6.0 scoring code, otherwise he would be higher in my table, while Chen had a shorter career. This table does not tell us who was the strongest skater, it only tells us who was among the strongest (with the ISU judging system) for the longest period of time. Now, to belittle the technical abilities of a skater who for such a long time was among the best on the technical score seems a bit absurd to me.
One thing that is not emphasized enough is that Hanyu was the only skater able to successfully transition from an era in which skaters performed one quad, maximum two, to one in which being a multi-quadruplist is the norm.
In the graph below I have listed, divided by type, the number of quadruple jumps attempted in the free program of the most important competitions. By attempted jumps I mean those that are marked with the number 4 on the protocol, regardless of whether the jump was judged fully rotated, underrotated or downgraded, whether it was completed perfectly or whether the skater fell. The only jumps missing are those like the salchow that Javier Fernandez wanted to perform as a quadruple but instead did a triple in the free program in Sochi 2014. The competitions considered are all editions of the World Championship and the Olympic Games from the 2004-05 season onwards. In the 2019-20 season the World Championship was not held. For the number relating to that year I used the sum of the quadruples performed at the European Championship and the Four Continents Championship. It is not exactly the same thing, in the sum of the two competitions there was a higher number of skaters but three important skaters were missing, Chen, Uno and Vincent Zhou, but this is the best approximation I could think of so as not to miss a season. The vertical red line corresponding to the 2019 World Championship reminds us that from that competition onwards the scoring code has changed, with the transition from 8 to 7 jumps elements in the free program. Obviously in the upper area there is the data, below is the graph.
Up until the 2016 World Championships, there were only two types of quads performed, toe loop and salchow. Yes, in 2010 Daisuke Takahashi attempted a 4F, but it was a minor episode (over two seasons Takahashi attempted the 4F five times, never completing the rotation). In 2016, the number of toe loop and salchow increased and there were two 4Lz, and from that season onwards, what has been called the quad era began.
In the space in the top left graph, I have listed in red the names of eight skaters who have reached the world podium at least twice. I could have added a few more names, but all I would have gotten would have been a more difficult-to-read image. The skaters who have reached the world podium would have been divided into the two groups we see here anyway. The first is the one that Chan and Fernandez belong to (and this group also includes Denis Ten, Daisuke Takahashi or skaters who have won only one world medal like Takahiko Kozuka and Tatsuki Machida), who started competing in the senior category before the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games and continued to compete until the 2018 Olympic Games, then stopped right after the start of the quadruple era. The competitions they participated in are marked with a green diamond. There were fewer quadruple jumps than now, but for their era Chan and Fernandez were very good jumpers. Chan’s 4T was really remarkable, Fernandez for a certain period was one of the few skaters to do three quadruple jumps in the free skate.
The second group is the one that Nathan Chen, Boyang Jin, Yuma Kagiyama, Ilia Malinin and Shoma Uno belong to. Three of them, Chen, Jin and Uno, were among those who helped usher in the era of quads, with Kagiyama and Malinin arriving when the standard for a top-level free skate was at least three quads. They are all younger skaters than Chan and Fernandez, and they did what young skaters always do to try to outdo older skaters: they watched them and focused on the most effective way to get more points. For all of them, the answer was to increase the number of quads.
Amid this change, the only one who won before, when the free skate included one or two quads, and after, when they included four or five, was Hanyu. He was among the best in both eras, starting to do as an adult jumps that skaters now start to do as kids. And he did some amazing jumps. If that isn’t an indication of his amazing jumping ability, I don’t know what is.
At least at the moment on SkatingScores is impossible to do the type of research I did for the TES focusing only on jumps. So I looked at the main competitions in which Hanyu participated, and with this I mean the Olympic Games, the World Championship and the Grand Prix Final. I added three World Team Trophies to the check. In 2015 there were no very strong skaters when it comes to jumps, in 2017 and 2021 there were. In this case I went into the individual protocols and checked the names of the five skaters who in the free program obtained the most points from jumps alone. Here too I highlighted Hanyu’s name in yellow. Obviously, since it is a search focused on Hanyu, he is the only skater present in all the competitions.
There are 21 competitions, let’s say 20 of high level, I included the 2015 WTT for completeness, but we can do without considering it. In 20 competitions, 19 times Hanyu was among the top 5, the only time he was not one of the five skaters capable of obtaining the most points from the jumps, he was still the sixth. In a program that he skated immediately after an asthma attack. In the lower area I inserted the names of the strongest skaters present in those competitions who obtained a not so high score from the jumps. Shoma Uno appears in that area four times. The skater who in the 2022-23 season was so praised for his completeness, which included extraordinary jumps, at least according to some journalists, in 4 competitions (out of 10, in many of the competitions that I checked Uno was not there either because he was too young or because he did not qualify, as in the 2019 GPF) was not among the best on the jumps. Chan and Fernandez have also been out of the top 5 in jumps several times, and Boyang Jin was once there too. Vincent Zhou is also listed in the lower area of the table. He once missed the free skate because he missed all his jumps in the short program and did not qualify for the second half of the competition.
The only one who has always been in the top 5 is Chen, in a senior career that lasted 6 years (if I had only looked at the first 6 years for Hanyu, he would have always been in the top 5 too). In fact, Hanyu has not usually been limited to being in the top 5 skaters who have scored the most jumps. He has almost always been in the top 3. When has he placed fourth or fifth in this ranking? At the 2015 World Championships, when he showed up with almost no training because he had undergone stomach surgery at the end of December and when he started training he sprained his ankle and had to stop. At the 2016 World Championships, when he was suffering from an almost career-ending Lisfranc injury. At the 2018 Olympics, when he skated despite a sprained ankle that hadn’t healed yet. At the 2022 Olympics, the day after suffering yet another bad sprained ankle. Four times when he was injured. Otherwise, Hanyu has always been one of the top three skaters who scored the most points for his jumps even though, according to ESPN, Hanyu’s jumps weren’t exactly great.
One of the reasons Hanyu has scored so many points for his jumps is because his jumps have always been of high quality. I compared the highest GOE achieved by skaters on 3A and on the three quads Hanyu has performed most often: toe loop, salchow, and loop. I have cut the screenshots showing only the best results, all those who obtained the maximum GOE or at least the best 10 results (keeping in mind that I publish all those who obtained the same score). For each jump there are two screenshots mounted one under the other, for the score code +3/-3 and for the +5/-5. I have highlighted Hanyu in green, and drawn a thin red line on the jumps performed in a national or regional competition. In this way the data can be read, but you can see if the high scores came only in national competitions, with the risk of being inflated, or if they also came in international competitions, and therefore the quality of the jump is usually high. This is the 3A.
The image speaks for itself.
In the 4T Hanyu’s superiority over the other skaters is not as clear, but it is clear that his is a really good jump:
The 4S:
The 4Lo:
For the 4Lz I did not do this kind of check because for various reasons Hanyu has performed this jump in competition only three times. However I can watch the best of his executions in competition (in the official training he has performed some of even higher quality) and this is a great jump. One of the best quadruple lutz ever performed in competition by anyone.
The quality of Hanyu’s jumps is evident, and it is linked to details such as the difficulty of the entry, the amplitude, and the quality of the landing. Returning to 3A, this is the one from the short program of the 2019 World Championship.
Chen, the skater who for some years, before Malinin’s arrival, was the one who did the most jumps, did not do any steps before the jump, Hanyu made a counter, a very difficult entry. We see the landing.
Chen is unbalanced forward. He doesn’t make any serious mistakes, but he controls the jump with difficulty. Hanyu seems to be doing the simplest thing in the world. The quality of the jumps is important. Chen has made better landings than this, although he has never reached Hanyu’s quality. When he was not making mistakes, Hanyu’s quality was this.
There is another thing we see from these screenshots: the amplitude. Hanyu with his jump traveled almost a meter more than the distance traveled by Chen. This is not a small difference. All the triple axel performed that day have been collected in this video:
I focused on this competition because we have the opportunity to make a comparison that we normally cannot do. That day, Japanese television broadcast the data of almost all the 3A made in the short program, the only jump made by everyone (except by a couple of skaters who made a 2A):

Hanyu’s jump is the longest and the highest (as well as the one with the most difficult entry and the most beautiful exit). Unfortunately I don’t have a similarly complete list for other jumps, even though every time the dimensions were published, with less complete information, Hanyu’s jump was among the widest. What I did find were the measurements of some jumps done at the Grand Prix Final in 2019.

The difference with Chen’s 4Lz in the short program is minimal, but the lutz (and toe loop) are toe jumps. In a toe jump, skaters push off with two legs, not just one. By their very nature, toe jumps are bigger than edge jumps. Doing an edge jump that is the same size as a toe jump is possible, but it is not easy at all. And isn’t Hanyu known for his jumps? Saying that he is not only known for his jumps is one thing, but implying that his jumps are not extraordinary is another.
Quality is not the only thing that has helped Hanyu stay at the top for so long. Among other things, he learned new quadruples after the age of twenty, when he already had an Olympic gold medal around his neck and could have considered himself satisfied with his career. In the post-war period, the list of skaters who, for various reasons, left competitions immediately after winning the Olympic gold (or at most immediately after participating in the World Championships held immediately after the Olympics) includes Hayes Alan Jenkins, David Jenkins, Manfred Schnelldorfer, Wolfgang Schwarz, John Curry, Robin Cousins, Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano (although he later regretted it and returned after five years he had skated as a pro to participate in the Olympic Games one last time), Viktor Petrenko (who also regretted it and returned a year later to participate in the Olympic Games), Ilia Kulik, Alexei Yagudin, Evan Lysacek and Nathan Chen, that is, almost everyone. Those who kept going were Dick Button (who won his second Olympic gold and then stopped, which Hanyu too could have done, but instead he decided to keep going even after his second gold), Ondrej Nepela (for just one season, and only because what became his last World Championship was held in his hometown), Alexei Urmanov, Evgeni Plushenko (who took a few seasons off anyway) and Hanyu. The figure skating that was at the beginning of Nepela, Urmanov and Plushenko’s career was the same as at the end of their careers, they didn’t need to learn how to do new things. The change that occurred during Hanyu’s career is something unprecedented, and yet he was able to stay at the top because he continued to improve, among other things by adding more quadruples to his repertoire, and by performing a remarkable number of quadruples.
How many quadruples did Hanyu perform in his career? And what did the other skaters do? Once again SkatingScores came to my aid with its database and the possibility of doing searches. There may be small inaccuracies, there may be some protocol missing from SkatingScores. For example, SkatingScores is missing the Colorado Spring Invitational, the competition in which Brandon Mroz landed what the ISU recognized as the first 4Lz in history. And some Japanese regional competitions from a few years ago are missing. I have several protocols related to competitions in which Hanyu participated that are not in SkatingScores. Even competitions in which he performed the 4T. However, almost all the information are present. Therefore, I checked all the skaters who attempted at least one jump between 4Lo, 4F, 4Lz and 4A. Once I saw who they were, I checked if they had also performed 4T and/or 4S, because it is not a given that they did so. Daniel Grassl performed 4Lo, 4F and 4Lz several times in competition, he never attempted 4T or 4S.
In the table I have indicated all the skaters who at least once, even at a national competition, have attempted at least once four different types of quadruples. Maybe one or more of these quadruples did not succeed, but if they tried it means that there is training behind it, there is a lot of work, and I wanted to recognize it. The success or failure in the jumps is however distinguishable: where I used the X sign the skater has actually completed at least one time the quadruple with at least GOE equal to 0.00, where I used the O sign the skater has attempted the quadruple at least once, but the GOE has always been negative.
20 men, to which I added the name of the one I believe is the only woman who has done 4 different types of quads, Alexandra Trusova. I’m not sure, I didn’t check the women, maybe some young Russian skater did it in some national competition, but I don’t think so. In the column tried I listed how many different types of quads were attempted by the skaters. In the column GOE+ I listed how many types of quads were successfully completed by the skaters. I transcribed the names of those who completed at least four types of quads with positive GOE in another table, so you can see them better.
The men have become just under half, with only 9 names remaining (plus Trusova, who I did not include in the table). Of these skaters only one, Malinin, has successfully performed all six quadruples. Another, Chen, has performed five. 7 skaters (8 counting Trusova) have performed four types of quadruples. Of these seven, Hanyu is the only one who has attempted five types of quadruples. He did not succeed with the fifth quadruple, true. But the fact that Hanyu attempted it somehow places him above the other six, also because his attempt was on a particularly difficult jump. At the moment, only three have attempted it in competition, one has completed it, two have not. Artur Dmitriev Jr. was the first to attempt it, probably more to make people talk about him than anything else, given that on quadruple jumps (of all types) his success rate is very low. Hanyu didn’t need a jump to make people talk about him, but because 4A became his goal after his second Olympic gold, 4A became a talking point during the men’s competition. But the ESPN article managed to dismiss Hanyu’s jumps as unimportant, choosing to talk about the artistic aspect but placing an emphasis on beauty in a way that makes you forget that artistic perfection is only achievable by those who master the technique at the highest levels, as if Hanyu were not also an athlete.
Hanyu attempted five different types of quads, completing four of them. But how many quads did he do in his career? How many did the other skaters do? I checked the data of the skaters in the table I posted above. I added a few skaters to them. Adam Siao Him Fa, who attempted four types of quads, although so far he has only landed three correctly. Chan and Fernandez who, Hanyu aside, were the two skaters who won the most, the first in the four-year period leading up to Sochi and the second in the four-year period leading up to PyeongChang. And finally Kevin Reynolds, who may have won little, but who was able to land the combination 4T+3T+3Lo, who in 2010 was the first skater to land two quadruples in the short program and who in 2013 was the first to land five quadruples in a competition (SP+FS), so when we talk about quadruples it is right to remember him too.

Uno is clearly the one who has performed the most quadruples because he had a longer career than Chen, a career concentrated in the quadruple era. Hanyu has suffered several injuries and this has limited his competition participation, five events in total in his last two Olympic seasons, otherwise he would have performed many more quadruples. Even so, the difference between Hanyu and Chen is not great, and it reverses if the 3A jumps are included in the count, and the 3A is a jump not that much easier than a quadruple:

When Hanyu moved up to the senior category, few skaters performed a quad in the short program and one or two in the free skate. He himself performed only one in the free skate. Barring mistakes, since the third competition of the 2015-16 season he has always performed two quads in the short program. And since the 2016-17 season he has always planned layouts with at least 4 quads. Who are the skaters who have performed the most quads in a single program?

One last detail. The article is written in the past tense. True, Hanyu has decided not to participate in competitions anymore. This does not mean that he has put aside the athletic aspect. Just a few days ago he did this 4Lo:

And if I will always remember the beauty of Prologue, of Gift, of Re_Pray, of Notte stellata 2024 and 2024, of the three new programs performed in Fantasy on Ice and of the programs he uploaded on his YouTube channel, for Hanyu the past should only be used with regard to the competitions, because from what we have seen in these two years we can be sure that in the future he will continue to leave us breathless. As an artist and as an athlete.

56 Stati Uniti
5 Spagna
4 Canada e Repubblica Dominicana
3 Brasile, Francia e Giappone
2 Germania, Giamaica, Serbia e Svezia
1 Argentina, Australia, Croazia, Filippine, Gran Bretagna, Grecia, India, Irlanda del Nord, Panama, Portogallo, Russia, Scozia, Svizzera e Venezuela.
Oltre la metà sono statunitensi? In una classifica fatta negli Stati Uniti? Curioso.
L’altra tabella interessante è quella relativa agli sport:
24 basket
17 baseball
15 calcio
12 football
6 tennis
4 golf, boxe
3 atletica, automobilismo, hockey
2 nuoto, ginnastica artistica, arti marziali
1 sci, snowboard, cricket
At his peak, Hanyu was not so much a figure skater but a rock star.
Not so much a figure skater? Davvero?
Fans followed him around the world, armed with Winnie the Pooh toys. He was known to carry a Pooh tissue box to competitions and it became a thing.
Winnie the Pooh dunque.
Hanyu wasn’t known for the big jumps that have come to dominate figure skating in recent years.
3A (triplo axel) Vern Taylor
4T (quadruplo toe loop) Kurt Browning
4S (quadruplo salchow) Timothy Goebel
4Lz (quadruplo lutz) Brandon Mroz
4F (quadruplo flip) Shoma Uno
4Lo (quadruplo loop) Yuzuru Hanyu
4A (quadruplo axel) Ilia Malinin
No, non li gonfiano affatto, i punteggi.
Ho evidenziato in giallo Hanyu.

Al controllo ho aggiunto tre World Team Trophy.
Chen è sbilanciato in avanti.

Come artista e come atleta.
On July 19, 2022, Yuzuru Hanyu announced that he had decided to leave competitions and wanted to turn professional. An unsurprising decision, after he competed for three entire Olympic cycles, setting an impressive number of records. But his public activities in these two years are no less impressive.
Medias
The announcement of the transition to professionalism took place in a press conference that lasted almost an hour and was broadcast live on the internet. These two videos contain only part of the press conference, but on YouTube you can activate the English subtitles.
Hanyu later appeared in several television shows. If I’m not forgetting any, those related to the immediate farewell to the competitions were Hodo Station, News Zero and The Never Ending Challenges, and in September there were five appearances on local channels in Sendai or Tohoku.
As important as they are for Hanyu, I leave out almost entirely the activities linked to his sponsors, I simply point out that when he turned professional, confirmed the sponsorship with Ajinomoto, ANA (the collaboration ended in autumn 2023), Citizen, Nishikawa (the collaboration ended in the fall of 2024), Phiten, Sekkisei, Towa Pharmaceutical, and that there is a very close collaboration with TV Asahi. For them he created various videos, photos and audio, some of which went viral.
Over time, several television channels have created special programs focusing on him. I limit myself to quickly recalling his meetings with Shae-Lynn Bourne, with Kohei Uchimura, with Mao Daichi, or the fact that several specials dedicated to the shows in which he was the protagonist were broadcast.
In December 2022 he was a guest on Yuming’s All Night Nippon Gold radio broadcast. At the end of the month Hanyu participated as a judge at Kohaku Uta Gassen for the second time. In January he was a guest of Shinya Kiyozuka on his show Classic TV. In May he was invited by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi to a special edition of Tetsuko’s Room. In August he appeared on Gen Hoshino’s program Ogen-san. In October he was the protagonist of the Switch Interviews together with Koichi Domoto. Instead, a conversation with Shigesato Itoi was released only as a text, with translation also into English.
On December 7, 2023, Hanyu celebrated his birthday on the internet, in the Roppongi Metaverse, together with 35,000 fans.
Beyond figure skating
On September 29, Hanyu participated as a special guest in the celebration ceremony for the fiftieth anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan.
On October 11th the names of the winners of the Kikuchi Kan Prize were announced, and among these names there is also that of Hanyu. Born as a literary prize, it was later also awarded to those who contributed in various ways to spreading Japanese culture. The prize was awarded on December 2, even though Hanyu was unable to be present at the ceremony, for which he made a thank you video, because he was busy with Prologue.
Other awards received by Hanyu are the Grand Prize Google Search Award, the Face of the Year by Yahoo Japan, the Japan PR Award and the Special Achievement Award by the Japan Skating Federation.
In October, Hanyu appeared on the cover of Aera. The photos of the service were taken by Mika Ninagawa. A photo from this service was included in the exhibition Hokusai: Inspiration and Influence which was held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston between March 26 and July 16, 2023 and at the Seattle Art Museum between October 19, 2023 and January 21, 2024.
Some of Hanyu’s costumes, or posters focused on him created during his competitive career, have been displayed in various exhibitions.
In May 2022, the film Beijing 2022, dedicated to the 2022 Olympic Games and featuring Hanyu as one of the protagonists, was distributed worldwide. The film won the Guirlande d’Honneur at the Milano International Sport Movies & TV Festival 2023.
As has been the case for several years, Hanyu continues to be celebrated in the city of Kakuda through tanbo art, with his image created in a rice field using different colored rice plants. In 2023 Hanyu was depicted, next to Sendai founder Date Masamune, in the Notte stellata costume. In 2024 he was depicted skating One Summer’s Day.
In the summer of 2023 Hanyu appeared on the cover of Elle Japan wearing Gucci clothes. The collaboration between the prestigious brands led to the inauguration of Gucci’s Ginza Gallery with the photographic exhibition Yuzuru Hanyu: A Journey Beyond Dreams featured by Elle and two videos, available with English subtitles:
On March 14, 2024, Hanyu was officially named Gucci Brand Ambassador. In addition to appearing on the cover of GQ Japan and recording some audio for Gucci, he was the protagonist of a second exhibition at the Ginza Gallery, In Focus: Yuzuru Hanyu Lensed by Jiro Konami.
Natural disasters
Hanyu participated in 24-Hours TV continuously between 2014 and 2022. In 2022 he performed a perfect version of Introduction and rondo capriccioso.
Over time, several donations made by Hanyu or associations linked to him have been announced. Donations linked to two earthquakes are known, the one in Turkey at the beginning of 2023 and the one which devastated the Noto Peninsula on 1 January 2024, on the western coast of Japan (in this case there were two donations), and to Ice Rink in Sendai.
In December 2022, it was announced that Hanyu would occasionally collaborate with NTV’s News Every with a special broadcast entitled Yuzuru Hanyu, Thoughts I want to convey and dedicated to natural calamities and disaster prevention. The first episode, broadcast on March 13, 2023, was dedicated to the town of Tomioka, evacuated following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The second episode, broadcast on July 5, 2023, focused on Kumamoto prefecture, heavily damaged in 2020 by some landslides caused by heavy rains. The third episode, dedicated to the work of rescuers operating in areas affected by a natural disaster, was broadcast on 15 December 2023. The fourth episode, dedicated to the city of Wajima and the earthquake that devastated the Noto Peninsula on 1 January 2024, was broadcast on July 9, 2024. Recordings of these broadcasts were uploaded by News Every to YouTube:
On October 18, 2022, he surprisingly showed up at the Major’s Cup in Sendai, a competition created with the money he donated after winning his second Olympic gold, and skated Parisienne Walkways before the start of the competition.
Hanyu continues to lend his face as an ambassador for the Tour de Tohoku cycling event.
Hanyu has served as the tourism ambassador for the city of Sendai for several years. In this capacity he created a video, also available in the version with English subtitles:
When the city of Sendai decided to renovate the Xebio Arena and turn it into a permanent ice rink, Hanyu expressed his support. He later appeared on the city’s social media to provide information about Sendai and its facilities.
Video recorded at Ice Rink Sendai. Hanyu talks a little about the channel and makes an appointment for the SharePractice the next day. Contains three jumps and a spin, filmed in unusual shots.
Recording of two hours of training broadcast live on YouTube. Among the most important moments of the training are the execution of the 4Lo+3T combination, still never landed in competition by anyone, and a perfect interpretation of Seimei with the layout of the 2018 Olympic Games.
The new video contains two programs, Change, an exhibition program from when he competed in the junior category, and Dreamy Aspiration, a new program choreographed by him. Between the two programs he speaks, and this time his words are accompanied by English subtitles, the recognition that not only Japanese fans, but also international ones, have continued to follow him. Not all videos will be subtitled because subtitles take time, but as much as possible Hanyu tries to make himself understood by everyone. In this video he talks, among other things, about his plan to open a section of his channel reserved for subscribers. He won’t be very active, he has too many commitments to be able to publish something continuously, also because he doesn’t compromise on quality: the videos must be done well, and this takes time. Hanyu explicitly said that we can talk about the membership videos, unless he asks us otherwise. I don’t intend to dwell on all of them, some are simply audio in which he speaks over a still image, with at most one jump placed at the end of the video. The comments are always interesting, but anyone who wants to hear or read them must subscribe. What interests me now are the programs. Among the videos published in the subscribers section there are the versions of Change and Dreamy Aspiration shot from a fixed camera, without any type of editing. Another video related to Prologue, the version of Seimei skated by Hanyu on the first day in Yokohama, is also uploaded in the subscriber section of the channel.
New program choreographed by Hanyu to music that accompanied one of the Prologue videos. Some of the images that Hanyu mounted next to him were also part of Prologue.
New program choreographed by Hanyu and used as closing credits in Gift. In the subscriber section of the YouTube channel you can watch the unedited version of the program.
Exhibition program created for Fantasy on Ice in 2015 and skated by Hanyu at galas in the 2015-16 season.

Free program skated in the 2012-13 season. It is the first free choreographed for Hanyu after his move to Canada, and the final part of this program is the last thing he performed in public as an amateur skater, at the conclusion of Fantasy on Ice 2022. The video, filmed and edited by Hanyu, like the others on the channel, is uploaded in the members section of the channel.
In preparation for Re_Pray Hanyu filmed about ten minutes of a practice and uploaded them to the memers section of his channel. In the same section there is a version of Goliath played in the gym, with a fixed camera and without special effects. The program is a new program choreographed by Hanyu.
New program choreographed by Hanyu. A different version – in this case Hanyu starts skating facing the short side of the rink, in the other he is facing the long side – filmed by a fixed camera and without special effects is uploaded in the members section of the channel.
Program choreographed by Hanyu and created with the collaboration of Geek Pictures. Used as credits in Re_Pray, although the Re_Pray version was reworked to add images from the show.
In the members section there is another interesting video, the study for a choreography done in the gym. Hanyu is working on a new program that he should release in August for subscribers and later for everyone.
Other social channels of Hanyu, two general and others dedicated to a single show, can be found on Twitter and Instagram.
With Prologue Hanyu inaugurated the concept of one man show on ice. The show took place in two cities, Yokohama and Hachinohe. Initially there were supposed to be two dates per city, the enormous demand for tickets led to the addition of a third in Hachinohe. All shows were sold out, 7,900 spectators per day in the first city, 3,000 per day in the second. An hour and a half of show opened by six minutes of warm-up, something that was previously imaginable for a show, and then programs performed live alternating with videos broadcast on the giant screen, in an original creation that captured the spectators and was appreciated by critics to the point of winning the Grand Prix in the Best Relay Broadcast category of the JSBA Original Program Awards.
Two dates of the show were broadcast live on television in Japan by Asahi and in live viewing in a number of cinemas between 81 (Yokohama 2) and 77 (Hachinohe 3), the other three dates were broadcast deferred by Asahi .
The lineup (some programs were only partially performed):
Seimei
Change
Let’s Go Crazy/Hana ni nare/Otoñal/Étude in D-sharp minor (programs performed on different days)
Spartacus/Hello, I Love You/Mission: Impossible II/Somebody to Love/Sing, Sing, Sing (programs performed on different days)
Romeo+Juliet (program started with an old video and ended live on the rink)
A Fleeting Dream (new program choreographed by Hanyu and accompanied by Rhizomatiks with projection mapping, preceded by the Dreamy Aspiration video)
Haru yo, koi (program accompanied by projection mapping)
On February 26, 2023, Hanyu interpreted Gift, the first ice event ever held at the Tokyo Dome. The setup was grandiose with two orchestras, including the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, a dance troupe, a giant screen of truly colossal dimensions and remarkable special effects. The direction is by Mikiko, with whom Hanyu began collaborating on Prologue. The show was sold out, with 35,000 people present on Tokyo Dome, another 30,000 in the cinemas and theaters where the live viewing was broadcast, and a live television broadcast in Japan on Disney+ and in the rest of the world on Globe Coding (with subtitles in several languages). The show, excluding the ice-making break, lasted over two hours. The show was later made available worldwide, with subtitles in around thirty languages, on Disney+.
The lineup (some programs were only partially performed):
The Firebird
Hope and Legacy
One Summer’s Day (new program choreographed by David Wilson)
Ballade N. 1 in G minor (program started with a video recorded in the gym and finished live on the rink)
Introduction and rondo capriccioso (preceded by the warm up)
Let Me Entertain You
Ashura-chan (new program choreographed by Hanyu)
The Phantom of the Opera
A Fleeting Dream
Notte stellata
Boku no koto (video projected on the giant screen together with the credits)
Between 2023 and 2024 Hanyu was the protagonist of one solo-tour, Re_Pray. Initially the show was supposed to take place in three cities, in the end a fourth was added. There are two dates for each city, all the shows were sold out: 14,000 people a day in Saitama, 5,500 in Saga, 7,000 in Yokohama and 5,800 in Rifu. A date in each city was broadcast live in Japan on Asahi and in the rest of the world, with subtitles in multiple languages, on Beyond_Live. The other four dates were broadcast deferred on Asahi. For the dates broadcast live, a live viewing was also organized in a number of theaters between 72 and 130 (also counting some theaters in Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea). No live music or other performers like in Gift, but again Mikiko’s direction for another show of about two hours with projection mapping, various types of effects and a remarkable narration. In addition to Hanyu’s skating, which continues to offer shows with a much higher technical content than that of the competition programs.
The lineup (some programs were only partially performed):
A Fleeting Dream
Gate of Living (new program choreographed by Mikiko)
Hope and Legacy (first day)/Ashura-chan (second day)
Megalovania (new program choreographed by Hanyu and preceded by a video of Hanyu who, off the ice, performs various acrobatics – including an axel – to try to avoid obstacles, like a video game character would do)
The Darkness of Eternity (new program choreographed by Hanyu and preceded by the warm up)
A Fleeting Dream_RE (reinterpretation of the first program of the show)
Requiem of Heaven and Earth
One Summer’s Day
Haru yo, koi
Estpolis II: Rise of the Sinistrals (program recorded in the Ice Rink in Sendai and broadcast on the giant screen together with the closing credits)
Notte stellata is not a Hanyu show, even though he is the chairperson and without him the show would make no sense. Dedicated to the memory of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, it took place in Rifu’s Sekisui Heim Super Arena, a building that had been temporarily used as a morgue after the earthquake.
The first edition of Notte stellata took place between 10 and 12 March 2023, the second between 8 and 10 March 2024. The small cast is made up of skaters who for different reasons were important for Hanyu or for Tohoku. In addition to Hanyu, they are Violetta Afanasieva, Shae-Lynn Bourne, Jason Brown, Javier Fernandez (only in the second edition), Rika Hongo, Satoko Miyahara, Takahito Mura, Akiko Suzuki and Keiji Tanaka. They were joined in 2023 by the gymnast Kohei Uchimura, in 2024 by the actress Mao Daichi.
On both occasions the show was opened by Hanyu with the program Notte stellata, followed by a group number performed by all the skaters except Hanyu on Twinkling Stars of Hope. The first half of the show, in both editions, was closed by a program in collaboration with the special guest. In 2023 Hanyu performed Conquest of Paradise, a new program choreographed partly by David Wilson and partly by himself, together with Uchimura, who performed on a springboard placed next to one of the short sides of the rink. In 2024 Hanyu performed Carmina Burana, with choreography partly by Shae-Lynn Bourne and partly by Rino Masaki, together with Daichi, who performed on a stage placed next to one of the short sides of the rink. In both cases the second part of the show was opened by a group number performed on the rink by several skaters and on a giant screen by Hanyu. The songs chosen were Dynamite in 2023 and Permission to Dance in 2024. Hanyu returned to the rink towards the end of the show to perform in 2023 Haru yo, koi, in 2024 a new program choreographed by David Wilson, Danny Boy. The show concluded with a group number to Song of Hope, choreographed by David Wilson. Notte stellata was sold out on all dates, 6,000 spectators per day in 2023, 6,100 in 2024. All dates were broadcast live in Japan on Hulu and in live viewing in a number of theaters varying between 62 and 82.
Several videos are available on the official Nippon TV channel, although it should be noted that some are only available for a limited period of time due to music copyright issues. This is the playlist with English subtitles (also includes some videos from News Every):
This, much longer, is the playlist only in Japanese (it also includes some videos from News Every):
Other shows
Between March 30 and April 10, 2023, Hanyu participated in the 10 dates of the Stars on Ice Japan tour. The tour visited three cities, with three shows in the first two cities and four in the last. Hanyu performed three different programs: The Phantom of the Opera on the first day in each city, Ashura-chan on the second (and in the last day of the tour), and One Summer’s Day on the third. As for the opening number, All These Things that I’ve Done, Hanyu skated the first minute alone, with choreography created by him.
Between May and June 2023 Hanyu participated in Fantasy on Ice, skating in the initial and final group numbers and performing one program. During the six dates of the tour A he interpreted a new program choreographed by himself, If…, with Issa and Kimi of Da Pump who performed live. During the six dates of the tour, B he interpreted another new program choreographed by him, Glamorous Sky, together with Mika Nakashima, who performed live. On the last date, in homage to Johnny Weir, who had announced his farewell to the show, he proposed an encore on the Otoñal step sequence not as he had performed it for a season and a half but in Weir’s version.
In 2024 Hanyu returned to Fantasy on Ice, this time only for the six dates of Tour A. Apart from the initial and final numbers, he performed two programs, Danny By and Meteor, the latter an original choreographed by him and presented together with T.M. Revolution, who performed live.
Publications
For all the shows Hanyu created various types of merchandising and at least one photo book. Other photo books have been done by photographers who regularly follow him, but there are so many that I have lost count (and I have certainly forgotten many other things). Show photo books are nice, but to a certain extent they are “normal” publications, in the sense that there is nothing surprising about publishing a photo book about a show. The most interesting ones in my opinion are Gift, the book illustrated by Clamp, and the Player Guide for Re_Pray. Two shows, Prologue and Gift, also have their own DVD/Blu ray version without subtitles (there are currently no known hypotheses of creating international versions). Books have also been made of Notte stellata, as well as the DVD/Blu ray of the 2023 edition.
Two other books are important: Aoi Honoo III and IV, the third and fourth parts of his autobiography, available only in Japanese. As with the previous volumes, also in this case Hanyu decided to donate his royalties to charity.
In conclusion…
In two years Hanyu has participated in countless television programmes, participated in I don’t know how many advertisements for his sponsors, published several books, created three innovative shows, conceived filmed and edited several videos for his YouTube channel and skated live (also if sometimes the number of people present was limited, or there was no television) on 51 occasions:
1 SharePractice (August 2022)
2 24-Hours TV 2022 (August 2022)
3-7 Prologue (November-December 2022)
8 Major’s Cup (December 2022)
9 Gift (February 2023)
10-12 Notte stellata 2023 (March 2023)
13-22 Stars on Ice 2023 (March-April 2023)
23-34 Fantasy on Ice 2023 (May-June 2023)
35-42 Re_Pray (November 2023-April 2024)
43-45 Notte stellata 2024 (March 2024)
46-51 Fantasy on Ice 2024 (May-June 2024)
If in a season a skater normally presents two programs in competition, and two or three in exhibition, also considering the shows, in two years Hanyu has interpreted in whole or in part a very high number of programs, 23 of which are new, personally creating 15 choreography:

Meteor (new program choreographed by Hanyu for Fantasy on Ice 2024 tour A, performed with T.M. Revolution, who sang live)
Group numbers for Fantasy on Ice not choreographed by Hanyu: Ain’t No Mountain High Enough/Rising Heart and USA for tour A in 2023, History Maker and Stars for tour B in 2023, Ray of Light and High Pressure four tour A in 2024.
As for the technical elements, maybe sooner or later I will decide to count them. It’s clear that Hanyu couldn’t care less about the competition rules, as he breaks them whenever he wants, because his focus is on the artistic aspect of the programs. This does not mean that he gives up on difficulties, in all his shows he has performed numerous quadruples. Sometimes he made mistakes, which is inevitable when you do difficult things, but if Re_Pray contains about three quarters of an hour of skating, with 5 or 6 quads (in The Darkness of Eternity there are 4S, 4T and combination 4T+1Eu+3S+1Eu+3S, in the warm up I think he sometimes did two, sometimes three quadruples), I don’t know how many 3A and 16 spins, it’s clear that the technical level is very high. However, the Zayak rule has been set aside since the Seimei of Prologue, with its three 3A, and with Parisienne Walkways at the Major’s Cup, with the 3A+3T combination, prohibited for years in a short program. We haven’t seen the 4Lo in the shows, only in the SharePractice and in some recorded video, where he also performed it in sequence with a 3A. If he doesn’t do it on the shows, it’s a choice that I understand perfectly and that I agree with, even if it’s not up to me to say something about his choices. He is the one who skates, he is the artistic director, his decisions are his. In fact, if other strong skaters were already incredulous for the technical difficulties of Prologue, with the subsequent shows Hanyu only continued to increase the technical difficulties, which far exceed those of a competition, and at the same time he wrote three stories, demonstrating ever-increasing narrative skills, and refined his technique by working on every detail. His first two years as a professional have been extraordinary, and I have no doubt that Hanyu will find a way to surprise us again.

Happy Anniversary, Hanyu-sama.
Italiano
Media
In seguito Hanyu è apparso in diverse trasmissioni televisive.
Video registrato all’Ice Rink Sendai.
Seimei
Change
Let’s Go Crazy/Hana ni nare/Otoñal/Étude in D-sharp minor (programmi eseguiti in giorni diversi)
Spartacus/Hello, I Love You/Mission: Impossible II/Somebody to Love/Sing, Sing, Sing (programmi eseguiti in giorni diversi)
The Firebird
Hope and Legacy
One Summer’s Day (programma inedito coreografato da David Wilson)
Introduzione e rondò capriccioso (preceduto dal warm up)
Let Me Entertain You
Ashura-chan (programma inedito coreografato da Hanyu)
Il fantasma dell’opera
A Fleeting Dream
Notte stellata
A Fleeting Dream
Gate of Living (programma inedito coreografato da Mikiko)
Hope and Legacy (primo giorno)/Ashura-chan (secondo giorno)
The Darkness of Eternity (programma inedito coreografato da Hanyu e preceduto dal warm up)
A Fleeting Dream_RE (reinterpretazione del primo programma dello show)
Requiem of Heaven and Earth
One Summer’s Day
Haru yo, koi
Altri show
In conclusione…
1 SharePractice (agosto 2022)
2 24-Hours TV 2022 (agosto 2022)
3-7 Prologue (novembre-dicembre 2022)
8 Major’s Cup (dicembre 2022)
9 Gift (febbraio 2023)
10-12 Notte stellata 2023 (marzo 2023)
13-22 Stars on Ice 2023 (marzo-aprile 2023)
23-34 Fantasy on Ice 2023 (maggio-giugno 2023)
35-42 Re_Pray (novembre 2023-aprile 2024)
43-45 Notte stellata 2024 (marzo 2024)
46-51 Fantasy on Ice 2024 (maggio-giugno 2024)

Hanyu Yuzuru was born on December 7, 1994. He started skating at 4 years old. At 9 years old he won his first national title in the Novice B category, in his first participation. For four seasons he competed in the Novice category (two in Novice B, two in Novice A), then for two seasons he competed in the Junior category. In the fall of 2010, when he was 15 years old, he moved up to the senior category, in which he competed for 12 seasons. For a summary of his career, the English Wikipedia page is considered a quality page, but there are so many things to say about Yanyu that the main page is flanked by several subpages.
This is the summary table of his results:
There would be an infinite number of things to say, I have limited myself to listing a few.
First male skater to get a medal at the Junior Japan Championship when he was still in the Junior High School (before him the same results had only been achieved by a girl, Miki Ando). Two years later the feat was also achieved by Shoma Uno, that was about one year younger than Hanyu at the date of the competition).
Youngest male single skater to win the Japan Junior Championships. He still holds this record.
Youngest skater to win the Men’s competition at the Junior Grand Prix Final. 9 years later the record was broke by Stephen Gogolev, 12 days younger than Hanyu. There is still no other skater younger than Hanyu.
Youngest Japanese male skater to win the Junior World Championship. He still hold this record (at an absolute level he is one of the youngest, preceded by Viktor Petrenko, Evgeni Plushenko and two or three other skaters).
One of only three skaters (in the Men’s competition) able of completing a perfect junior season with successes in the two Grand Prix competitions, the Final and the World Championship, as well as the National Championship. He achieved the result between the ages of 14 and 15, Alexander Shubin achieved the same victories at 19 years old, and Stephen Carriere (who did not participate in the Junior National championship) at 17 years old.
Youngest single skater to win a medal at the Four Continents Championship (Wenjing Sui, winner in Pairs in 2012, was younger than him). No one can surpass this record because the minimum age for competing among senior was raised.
Youngest Asian male skater to win a medal of any color, and also a gold medal, at a GP event (only one non-Asian, Plushenko, was younger than him).
Youngest Asian male skater to qualify for the Grand Prix Final.
Youngest Asian male skater to win a medal at the World Championship. He still hold this record.
Youngest Asian male skater to win a medal at the Grand Prix Final. Record later surpassed by Uno.
Youngest Asian male skater to win a gold medal at the GPF.
First skater to surpass the 100.00 points for the Short Program.
First Asian male skater to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games.
Second youngest male skater to win the gold medal at the Olympic Games. Even now Dick Button is the only skater younger than him to win a gold in the men’s competition.
Youngest Japanese skater to win a medal at the Olympic Games (he was younger than Mao Asada in 2010). Record later surpassed by Yuma Kagiyama.
Second skater (all discipline considered) after Alexei Yagudin to win in the same season Grand Prix Final, Olympic Games and World Championship. In the 2017-18 season Savchenko/Massot too achieved the same result.
First skater to receive a +3 GOE for the 3A in an international competition (he is also the skater who received the most +3).
First skater to land the 3A+1Lo+3S combination.
First skater to participate in the Grand Prix Final in the same calendar year in which he won the Olympic gold. Later Alina Zagitova did the same thing.
Only skater to win the Grand Prix Final in the same calendar year in which he won the Olympic gold.
First Asian male skater to win 2 gold at the Grand Prix Final.
First skater to surpass the 200.00 points in the Free Skate.
First skater to surpass 300.00 points in total.
Only skater able to surpass 110.00 points in the Short Program with the +3/-3 system.
Only skater able to surpass the 330.00 points in total with the +3/-3 system.
New record for the largest victory margin at a major international event across all disciplines (37.48 points, GPF 2015)
First skater to land a 4Lo.
Second male skater to win 4 gold at the Grand Prix Final, still the only single skater able to win them consecutively.
Only skater able to surpass 220.00 points in the Free Skate with the +3/-3 system.
First Asian male skater to win two gold at the World Championship.
First skater do land three quads in the second half of a program.
First Asian figure skater to win two Olympic gold (Men, Ladies, Pairs and Ice Dance considered). Second male skater to win two gold after WW II.
First Japanese athlete (regardless of the sport) to win two Olympic gold in an individual competition at the Winter Olympic Games.
First single skater to be ranked first in the world standings for five consecutive seasons.
First figure skater and youngest person to receive the People Honor’s Award.
First skater to complete a program with only quadruple and triple jumps (+ one euler).
Still the only skater to land a 4T+3A sequence in competition.
First skater to surpass 200.00 points for the FS with the +5/-5 system.
First skater to surpass 300.00 points for the total with the +5/-5 system.
First skater to land the 4T+1Eu+3F combination.
Third skater to land 5 quads in the Free Skate.
19 World record in the score (Plushenko, second in this rank, made 13 world records).
First and only man to complete the Super Slam.
7 medals at the World Championship, after the WW II only Jan Hoffmann won the same number of world medals.
26 consecutive international competitions (6 season and half) with a medal, after WW II only Plushenko did better.
6 gold at Japan Championship. Only Nobuo Sato won more (10). Tie with Takeshi Honda and Shoma Uno at six.
Only one of the three Japanese figure skater who competed at three Olympic Games (the other two are Daisuke Takahashi and Ryuchi Kihara. Kihara probably will compete in a fourth edition).
First skater to try a 4A at the Olympic Games.
Highest number of 10.00 received from the judges for an individual skater.
On July 19, 2022, Hanyu announced that he had decided to leave the competitions and wanted to turn professional. An unsurprising decision, after he competed at the highest levels for three entire Olympic cycles. I have listed the main results, but to better understand how long his career was, I checked in how many seasons the skaters who won an Olympic medal, or a world gold, took part in at least one first-level competition after the war.
For first-level competitions I considered:
Olympic Games
World Championship
Grand Prix Final (which, despite a much shorter history, in my opinion is just as important as a World Championship, because it is just as difficult to win)
Continental Championship: European Championship, Four Continents Championship and North American Championship (this competition is not exactly equivalent to the other two, it was biennial, not annual, and only US and Canadian skaters could participate, therefore even a strong skater like Sato Nobuo, who came close to the world podium, could not participate in the North American Championship)
Goodwill Games.
These are the most notable skaters who have had the longest careers:

Stojko, Joubert and Fernandez competed for 13 seasons. Calmat, Hoffman and Hanyu for 12. Eldredge, Plushenko (for him in 2014 I counted the participation in the Olympic team event) for 11. Nine other skaters, including three in our millennium, Chan, Ten and Uno, did it for 10 seasons. If we just look at the main other skaters who have competed in this millennium, Lysacek did it for 8 seasons, Yagudin and Buttle for 7, Chen for 6. Hanyu has had an extraordinarily long competitive career, and he has spent it all at a high level. Continuing to consider the competitions I listed above, I checked in how many seasons the skaters reached the podium at least once, and the result is this:

Hanyu has won at least one major medal in 11 seasons. The only season in which he did not win medals was 2021-22, in which he participated in only one international competition, the Olympic Games, and despite bad luck which, in the form of a hole in the ice, caused him to lose a quadruple, and despite a sprained ankle, he finished fourth. With the third free program. He came very close to winning a major medal for 12 seasons in a row. Fernandez, who competed one season longer than him, managed to win major medals in just 7 seasons.
12 seasons at the highest level. Two Olympic golds, something very few skaters can say they have won. No, I don’t consider the team medal. There are skaters who have won a team gold having done exactly what Hanyu did in Sochi, winning the short program, or who have finished third in a program, or maybe even fifth, and won a Team medal. The team medal can be won because you are lucky enough to be part of a strong team, so it says nothing about the skill of a skater. Two Olympic gold medals, after the War only him and Dick Button among the men. The Super Slam, he won everything, three of the four senior competitions he won multiple times.
The announcement of his farewell to competitions was not a surprise. The surprise is what he did next. That day in July Hanyu said that he would change our idea of what a professional skater is. As always he kept his word, but we’ll see what he did tomorrow.

Questa è la tabella sintetica dei suoi risultati;

I was very hesitant about the opportunity to write this blog post, above all for the fear of being misunderstood. Yet I consider it necessary, even after some time after an episode that should have been insignificant, which for a few days was seen as very significant, and which now seemed to have disappeared into thin air. But it didn’t, actually.
It’s been almost two years since Hanyu-san turned professional. Hanyu-san, not Yuzu. When I speak as a fan, I use the diminutive of the name. In other moments I prefer to use the surname. Hanyu-san has turned professional. We all remember his tension, which was ours too. He was afraid of losing us, he feared that we were only interested in the competitions, only in the medals. We were afraid of losing him, we were afraid that we would never have the opportunity to see him again.
Two years ago on August 7th, Hanyu-san started his YouTube channel. A video of just over a minute, just him wearing his regular practice clothes, in front of a white wall, saying a few sentences in Japanese. Was he embarrassed? Was he afraid of our reaction? He didn’t know how to relate to us? The last competition he participated in was still an open wound. He certainly feared he had disappointed us.
Two days later the second video arrived, still only in Japanese, but there was something more, and not just in the length, over five minutes. This time he wasn’t in front of a white wall of unknown location, he was at Sendai Ice Rink, and interspersed with his words there were images that everyone, even those who don’t know Japanese, could appreciate: three jumps and a spin. That day he thanked us for a higher number of subscriptions to the channel than what he expected, and that from people from all over the world, not only from Japan. And he made an appointment for the next day with SharePractice. He seemed a little embarrassed, partly because of the amount of registrations and messages he received, and partly, probably, because he was wondering whether he would live up to our expectations. He will always ask this to himself, it’s what pushes him to improve, and to give us extraordinary programs and shows.
We appreciated the SharePractice to the point of asking for another one. Maybe he will do it, maybe he won’t. It depends on many things, there may be insurmountable organizational difficulties. If he will do it, I assume everyone who can will tune in to watch it. If not, we will still have other opportunities to admire his skating. That day, towards the end of the stream of SharePractice, Hanyu-san stopped to read through our comments in the live chat on his phone. He wanted to read them, but in reality he couldn’t keep up with the speed at which they scrolled, because there were over 100,000 of us connected, and we wrote a lot. He asked us what program we would like to see at the end of the practice. I didn’t understand his words, I needed the translation, but he asked the fans a question, he wanted to listen to the voice of the fans.
The third video, the one in which Hanyu-san announced Prologue, contains English subtitles. He saw that there are many of us who follow him even outside Japan, he did his best to communicate with us too. And for Prologue he asked us to tell him which programs we would like to see him perform. He was again interested in the voice of the fandom. The fourth program after Seimei, Change, and the program chosen by the audience present in the arena using the luminous bracelets was the one requested by the fans on YouTube the most. I don’t know how many programs we requested and whether he, or someone for him, counted which programs received the most votes. But for him our opinion was important. Just like our presence.
I wasn’t in the arena. I wanted to be there, but organizing a trip to Japan is not that simple. But seeing how many people were there for him moved me too. He feared that the transition from Hanyu-senshu to Hanyu-san would lead to disinterest on the part of the public. It didn’t happen, and that’s important. It was the warmth of the public, of those who supported him in the arenas and of those who supported him from afar, that helped him heal from the wounds of Beijing and of recent years. And little by little he opened himself up to the fans. We all see it in the encores at the end of the shows. Now he has a greater reserve of energy, true. He has done very intense training, and that allowed him to skate better, to arrive at the end less tired, but it’s not just that. Our warmth gives him strength. He likes to communicate with us, the fans, the audience. He saw that we always remained by his side, even in difficult moments, when Japanese tabloids made his life very difficult with their intrusiveness and their shameful insinuations, even when in Saga he skated in a way that could not leave him satisfied. We see how he lights up when he skates around the arena and looks at the audience, how he draws strength from everyone around him. Hanyu-san, Hanyu-senshu, Hanyu-sama, Yuzu, gives us so much, and we do our best to reciprocate. What I think not everyone has understood is that we should take another step, leaving him the freedom to do what he wants, without having to justify himself or apologize for it.
Last month I wrote a message under one of his videos. Nothing strange, I’ve written quite a few messages in his channel before. The strange thing is that I received the notification that he had liked that message. Within two days Hanyu-san wrote another message in which he explained that he had put that like there by mistake, because while he was looking at the page, his finger slipped.
Hanyu-san’s explanation made me sad. Not for me, for him. I wrote a single tweet to report Hanyu-san’s like, because in my opinion it was an important thing for the community. My message, the one about that like, was a suggestion on how to manage the translation. What he is doing is both tiring and time-consuming, and as much as I like having the videos with subtitles, I prefer him to rest. There are enough translators in the fandom that I know I can read a translation of his words in no time.
In his last video Yuzu had asked us for help. He wanted to communicate with everyone, he explained his difficulties and asked for our opinion. And I gave mine, as a member of the community, and supported by the community, since I publicly asked for help on Twitter. Many people read my explanations and decided to put the like I asked for. When Yuzu’s involuntary like arrived, I let the community know that our message had reached its destination. Ours, in plural. It was something important to all of us. For me the episode ended there. Many celebrated that like, the prevailing feeling I saw was joy. However, some had very different emotions.
I have no idea what Hanyu-san saw of the social media reactions. I received some messages telling me to delete my tweet, and I saw some messages from someone who was badmouthing me behind my back. Not many, although someone said to me that there were many more. But for me it was a closed episode by then. Yuzu asked for our suggestion, I wrote down a possible solution, several fanyu helped me make the proposal more visible, he gave a sign of acceptance, I informed the other fanyu that we succeeded, case closed.
But unexpectedly, Hanyu-san posted another message. He wrote that he liked my message by mistake. He apologized for making a mistake, and he said that if it were to happen again, it would be a mistake again, asking the fandom to take it as such right away. And my reaction was: “but is it a joke?” I was incredulous.
I read some comments under that Hanyu-san’s message. Not Yuzu, as I wrote in some places above, but Hanyu-san. The one who asked the fans for help was Yuzu. The person who wrote that fans are all equal was Hanyu-san. Some fans celebrated for his affirmation. Why, didn’t they know? It doesn’t matter whether we have followed him for a long time, and have shared many emotions with him, or if we have arrived in a dark moment, giving him with our mere presence, our unconditional love, the strength to overcome difficulties. In Continues with Wings his eyes lit up when he felt that someone had supported him since he was competing among the Novices, but the fans who arrived in Beijing, who made him understand that what he did in those days was extraordinary, were equally important, and so are the fans of the professional era, because they were telling him that the competitions were not the only thing that mattered. We are all equal in that sense: Japanese, with whom he can relax because they understand his words in context and don’t need many explanations, and non-Japanese, who, despite the language and cultural barriers do their best to overcome and support him. We are all equal. And it’s not like he has a fondness for a particular fan when he stops to look at their banner. It’s not that he skated Hello, I Love You in Prologue, because he prefers the fans who suggested that program to him more, than those who suggested to skate Origin. When he said he loved fanart, he wasn’t saying he loved fans who make fanart more than those who don’t. I thought it was clear to everyone, and with the likes of some comments on his channel it should be the same. It’s not the sign of favoritism, but a form of communication. Hanyu-san’s message made me sad, because it told us that he is not free to do what he wants. No, he has to adjust himself to satisfy the expectations of millions of strangers, even if those expectations are unreasonable.
We are not his friends. His friends are the people he knows in real life. We are different. We are important because we give him a reason to continue to do his art, but we are important from afar, with the distance that exists between the artist and those who admire his art. But it would be nice if he could relax with us. There will always be a distance between us, but we have seen the transition from the emotional, but all in all composed greetings in Prologue to the dance for I’m invincible at the end of the Re_Pray tour. Hanyu-san broke up with us and became Yuzu. He welcomed the warmth of those who were present in the arena but also from those who were far away, like me, because we are the reason he made live broadcasts, live viewings and livestreams of his shows available. It is because there are many of us who loves what he does, and he used our warmth for a last dance. He wanted to be with us as much as possible. At that moment he wasn’t the artist performing a show, he was the man satisfied with his own work, enjoying sharing his feelings.
It’s reasonable that Hanyu-san decided not to stop to sign autographs. Would he dare to do so we would flock en masse, and he wouldn’t be able to leave. When he celebrated his birthday in the Metaverse, did he chat with any of us? Not that we know of. If he did, it wasn’t with me, I didn’t chat with anyone. But I wonder whether he engaged with anyone, protected by the anonymity of his avatar. I wish it to be true, that Yuzu was able to relax a little, without being a public figure and just interact. And in the same way I would like Yuzu to be able to give as many likes as he wants. A like from him shouldn’t change anything in the general rule, that every fan is treated equally. Giving a like is not favoritism. It’s a form of communication and even if he gives it to only one comment, it is by default, a message to the entire fandom. If he wants to relax a bit by reading some comments, and decides to do such a trivial thing like giving a like, he must be able to do it without causing a drama among his fans. He must be able to give even 20 likes to the same person if he feels like it. He should be able to use an object given to him by a fan in public without being accused of favoritism. As long as he can’t act freely as he wishes, he will stay Hanyu-san for us too, the public figure who can never relax, and that’s what makes me really sad.
Recently Yuzuru Hanyu has been the victim of a shameful attack by the tabloids. For months unscrupulous people, often hiding in anonymity, have thrown mud at a man who is a treasure for his country, and I’m not speaking in a figurative sense. In 2018 he was awarded the People Honor ‘s Award because he ‘gave dreams and thrills to the people and hope and courage to society.’
If his performances, his numerous successes, his ability to get up after every fall, after every injury, are extraordinary, alongside the athlete there is the man. The man who knows what it means to be afraid, to see your world collapse, to feel helpless, and to receive help. He found himself on one side of this relationship, that of someone who needed help, and as soon as he could he moved to the other, that of someone who gives help. He has not forgotten, and does what he can to help others. The Wikipedia section on what he is doing for others, and not just for the inhabitants of Tōhoku, is very long:
And even when what he does is for himself, because he loves skating, and loves contact with the public, what he does is important for people’s lives. He is important on an emotional level, and it is important on a material level.
According to Yamaguchi University, the economic impact of Hanyu’s first year as a professional linked to the shows in which he skated, advertising and the publishing world, is estimated at 17.6 billion yen:
How many people worked thanks to him? How many people have made a living? In December 2023, amid the tabloid defamation campaign, Hanyu held two shows in Saga, with an economic impact on the entire prefecture estimated at 482 million yen:
I personally know several people who left Italy to attend one or more stages of the Re_Pray tour live. And I’ve read about people doing it from other parts of the world. According to Hanyu, on the last day in Rifu there were people from around thirty different nations. People who spent their money on plane tickets. And who then spent their money to sleep in Japan, to eat in Japan, to move around Japan, and certainly also to buy some items in Japan to take home upon their return. I didn’t do it, an Italy-Japan trip is demanding, both on an organizational and economic level. Which means I bought the ticket to watch GIFTon GlobeCoding, and then the four tickets of RE_PRAY (+ archive) on Beyond_LIVE. In my own small way, I also contributed to the success of the shows, and therefore to the economy of Japan.
And I made several purchases. If we talk about merchandising we are talking about two T-shirt, a hoodie, two tote bags and a keychain from Prologue, a neckwarmer and a T-shirt from RE_PRAY, all the official books. For DVD, I still have to figure out if there are subtitles, because this is a fundamental difference, especially for the GIFT one. I bought the DVD of Notte stellata, a T-shirt and a pair of gloves, and there are other things like the backpack that I’m trying to buy. It’s not easy, navigating Japanese sites is challenging, it often seems that Japan doesn’t want the money of non-Japanese people, so maybe I’ll be able to buy something else, maybe not. But I have spent a lot of money in Japan, even though I have never been there.
Recently I have published a series of messages on X with the hashtags #羽生結弦 #HanyuBooks #TeamYuzu. All those messages contained a photo, almost always of books, sometimes of other things somehow connected to Hanyu. If I haven’t forgotten any, there are 46 Japanese books and magazines dedicated entirely (almost entirely) or partially (three) to Hanyu. Plus I ordered two that have yet to arrive, also because they haven’t been published yet. The Japanese publishing industry lives thanks to Hanyu. I’m not saying that books or newspapers wouldn’t exist if he wasn’t there, but how much lower would the earnings of so many people, photographers, publishers (with all the people who work for them), printers, sellers, shippers, be if Hanyu wasn’t there? Thanks to Hanyu, the publishing industry is supported by the Japanese and by all those people who, like me, don’t care about the additional costs for an intercontinental shipment. We are contributing enormously to the Japanese publishing industry. And apart from the books there are DVDs, I bought three of them (Time of Awakening, Time of Evolution, Notte stellata), the Prologue one I will definitely buy, for the GIFT one, as mentioned, it depends on the presence of subtitles. And three calendars.
Leaving Japanese books, moving on to Italian or English books, between printed books and ebooks, I read about forty books on Japan, some written by Japanese authors, because I wanted to learn more about the culture in which Hanyu was educated and in which he lives. Hanyu made me want to discover Japan. If that’s not being an ambassador for his culture to the world, I don’t know what is. I have read about twenty literary works by Japanese authors. In translation, of course, but those authors have gained something from me. I bought the Onmyoji I and II DVDs. And I know I’m not the only one who buys books or merchandise, as I know of people who go to Japan, or who have started lessons of Japanese.
What Hanyu is doing is extraordinary. His impact on the lives of many people is enormous. And, despite this, the tabloids have been carrying out an absurd defamation campaign based on nothing for months, demonstrating such great intellectual and moral paucity that I have no words to define it. I had a better image of Japan, but apparently in all places for an extraordinary person like Hanyu there are a remarkable amount of people who enjoy rolling in garbage, going so far as to create it themselves if they can’t find it. I hope that Japan understands that it has to pass specific laws to eliminate all this rubbish that ends up being printed on paper, for Hanyu and all the other numerous innocent victims of the tabloids.
Ulrich Salchow, Gillis Grafstrom, Karl Schafer, Dick Button, Yuzuru Hanyu. E poi ancora Madge Syers, Sonja Henie, Katarina Witt.
