I decided to check all the elements performed by Hanyu in his programs by comparing the evaluations he received from the judges before and after the PyeongChang Olympic season. Yesterday I explained the type of work I did, if you need it you can read my explanations here.

One of the jumps performed most often by Hanyu is the 4S, present in both the short program and the free skate. He sometimes did a mistake, even on important competitions, but when he doesn’t do a mistake it’s a really beautiful jump, even now. How did the judges rate it? How did they rate it in the ten best executions in international competition in each period?

Until the winter of 2018, on five occasions his 4S was considered perfect, on three other occasions Hanyu still obtained a higher score than 90% of the maximum GOE obtainable. In the last four seasons according to the judges Hanyu must have gotten worse, because none of his quadruple salchows has obtained the unanimous +5, and only on three occasions has he received a score higher than 90%, and not even of that much, compared to the maximum possible GOE.

Obviously these marks are also reflected in the average of the top ten performances, which fell from an extraordinary 94.73% to 84.64%, high in itself, but significantly lower than before. The best 4S performed by Hanyu in his last four competitive seasons received a score (91.96%) lower than the average of the ten best executions (94.73%) of the previous period. If we say that Hanyu received lower scores… that’s not a baseless complaint. That’s a fact.

Compared to yesterday, I added another table below. The judges tell us – their marks say it, and it is with the marks that the results of the competitions are determined – that the quality that Hanyu is capable of putting into his 4S has diminished. But how does he fare in the other elements? I also looked at the other elements, but to make a table with comparable data, I had to reduce the number, because not for all elements I found ten executions with positive GOE in each period. This means that under the table with the ten best executions for each element, you will find another table with the four best executions. In this case I left five 4S for the period up to and including the 2017-18 season, because the percentage is always 100%, regardless of whether we calculate it over four or five jumps. In these posts you will only find the graph linked to the larger table. The one tied to the smaller table I’ll post at the end, when I’ve checked the GOE percentages for each element. For now, I’m just leaving the data where everyone can check it.

Ho deciso di controllare tutti gli elementi eseguiti da Hanyu nei suoi programmi, facendo un confronto fra le valutazioni che ha ricevuto dai giudici prima e dopo la stagione olimpica di PyeongChang. Ho spiegato ieri il tipo di lavoro che ho fatto, se vi serve potere leggere le mie spiegazioni qui.

Uno dei salti eseguiti più spesso da Hanyu è il 4S, presente sia nel programma corto che nel libero. Qualche volta lo ha sbagliato, anche in occasioni importanti, ma quando non lo sbaglia si tratta di un salto davvero bello, anche adesso. Come lo hanno valutato i giudici? Come lo hanno valutato nelle dieci migliori esecuzioni in gare internazionali in ciascun periodo?

Fino all’inverno del 2018 in cinque occasioni il suo 4S è stato ritenuto perfetto, in altre tre occasioni Hanyu ha comunque ottenuto un voto superiore rispetto al 90% del GOE massimo ottenibile. Nelle ultime quattro stagioni secondo i giudici Hanyu deve essere peggiorato, perché nessuno dei suoi quadrupli salchow ha ottenuto il +5 unanime, e solo in tre occasioni ha ricevuto un voto superiore al 90%, e neppure di tanto, rispetto al GOE massimo possibile.

Ovviamente questi voti si riflettono anche nella media delle dieci migliori esecuzioni, che è scesa da uno straordinario 94,73% a un 84,64%, percentuale alta in sé, ma nettamente più bassa di prima. Il miglior 4S eseguito da Hanyu nelle sue ultime quattro stagioni agonistiche ha ricevuto un voto (91,96%) inferiore rispetto alla media delle dieci migliori esecuzioni (94,73%) del periodo precedente. Se noi diciamo che Hanyu ha ricevuto voti più bassi… non è una lamentela priva di fondamento. È un fatto.

Rispetto a ieri, in basso ho aggiunto un’altra tabella. I giudici ci dicono – lo dicono i loro voti, ed è con i voti che si determinano i risultati delle gare – che la qualità che Hanyu è capace di mettere nel 4S è diminuita. Ma negli altri elementi come se la cava? Ho guardato anche gli altri elementi ma per fare una tabella con dati confrontabili, ho dovuto ridurne il numero, perché non per tutti gli elementi ho trovato dieci esecuzioni con GOE positivo in ciascun periodo. Questo significa che sotto la tabella con le dieci migliori esecuzioni per ciascun elemento, ne trovate un’altra con le quattro migliori esecuzioni. In questo caso ho lasciato cinque 4S per il periodo fino alla stagione 2017-18 compresa, tanto la percentuale è sempre del 100%, indipendentemente dal fatto che la calcoliamo su quattro o cinque salti. In questi post trovate solo il grafico legato alla tabella più grande. Quello legato alla tabella più piccola lo pubblicherò alla fine, quando avrò controllato le percentuali di GOE per ciascun elemento. Per ora mi limito a lasciare i dati dove tutti li possono controllare.
