Second post dedicated to Shoma Uno’s scores. I remember that In the first post of the series, dedicated to Hanyu’s 4Lo, I explained how I worked. The following ones were dedicated to the 4S, the 4T in combination, the 4T, the 3A in combination, the 3A, the 3Lz, the 3F, and the 3Lo. When I watched the CCoSp I added some explanations on spins. Later I also looked at the CSSp, and since that spin is part of the short program on Chopin’s Ballade No. 1, in the same post I looked at the marks of that program the times Hanyu completed it without making any mistakes. I wrote also about the FCCoSp, the FCSSp, the FCSp, the StSq and the ChSq1. After checked Hanyu’s elements, I switched to Nathan Chen’s elements. First the 4Lz (as a solo jump or as the first jump of a combination), then the 4F in combination, the solo 4F, the 4S, the 4T combinations, the solo 4T, the 3A and the 3Lz, in combination and as a solo jump. After I watched the CCoSp, the CCSp, the FCCoSp, the FSSp, the FCSp, the StSq and the ChSq1.The last post is on Uno’s jumps.
For Uno’s spins I limited myself to reporting the data relating to the four best executions of the four spins that he often did both with the score code +3/-3 and with the score code +5/-5. The only graph concerns the average of the four types of spins. According to the judges the best executions of the CCoSp are slightly worse, in the other three spins Uno is improved. In no spin there is a really big variation, but overall the judges tell us that Uno performed slightly better spins.
I had already posted a few figures for Uno’s step sequence when I looked at Chen’s step sequence. These are the complete data. According to the judges, the quality of Uno’s step sequences (already a good step sequence) has improved.
Also for ChSq1 I had already published the data. In this case the average mark has risen very little if we look at the 10 best executions, it has dropped very little if we look at the best 4. We can say that the level of ChSq1 of Uno has not changed over time.

I confess that, having arrived at Shoma Uno, I got tired of transcribing data. The graphs are nice to look at, writing down the scores to make them is a tedious job. So I made some graphs, then ran out of patience and stopped. Not entirely, because I wanted to do a comparison of skaters a little broader than just a comparison between Yuzuru Hanyu and Nathan Chen, so at some point I stopped looking at the ten best executions for each element, but kept looking at the four best executions. So for now I’m reporting what I’ve done, some graphics dedicated to Uno, something less dedicated to Jason Brown, and even less dedicated to Boyang Jin. When I’m done with looking at the individual skaters, I’ll move on to the comparisons.
After I watched the CCoSp, the CCSp, the FCCoSp, the FSSp, the FCSp, the StSq and the ChSq1.
According to the judges, not only did Uno improve on 4F, but it is also a good jump given that with the score code +5/-5 he received several times marks above 60%, i.e. above +3. Details such as prerotation and full blade are obviously abstract concepts, which have nothing to do with scores. Naive me that I had not understood.
On 4Lo Uno improved if we look at the ten best executions – at the beginning he received very few positive GOE – slightly worsened if we look only at the four best executions. Of course, we have to behave exactly like the technical panel and not look at whether the rotations have been completed in the air or on the ice.
For the 4T in combination I looked at two options, in combination with the 3T and in combination with the 2T. He has made few combinations of 4T+3T in recent seasons, and in this case his scores have dropped.
In the 4T+2T combination Uno’s average remained stable (very slight improvement) if we look at the ten best executions, it got worse if we look at the four best executions. Since I made the graphs, I’m publishing them, but in reality, in the comparison between skaters, I have combined all the combinations that start with a 4T in a single category.
The solo 4T received lower marks no matter how many executions we look at.
On 3A I decided to cut it short, so I stopped making graphs. Uno’s marks have dropped, and by a lot, in the combination 3A+1Eu+3F (or 3A+1Lo+3F) both if we look at the ten best executions and if we look at the four best. The same goes, albeit with a much less pronounced drop, if we look at 3A alone. For 3Lo, I only watched the four best executions, and the scores dropped here too.

In my check on the elements executed by Nathan Chen I’m now at the ChSq1. After checked Hanyu’s elements, I switched do Chen’s elements. First the 4Lz (as a solo jump or as the first jump of a combination), then the 4F in combination, the solo 4F, the 4S, the 4T combinations, the solo 4T, the 3A and the 3Lz, in combination and as a solo jump. After I watched the CCoSp, the CCSp, the FCCoSp, the FSSp, the FCSp and the StSq.
In this case, Chen’s scores have grown impressively.
As I did for the StSq, I compared Chen’s best ten executions of ChSq1 with Brown, Hanyu and Uno’s best ten executions.
Okay, I have to acknowledge one thing. Unlike what happened with the step sequence, it is not Hanyu the one who received the lowest marks after the 2017-18 season, but Uno. By very little. And it’s not Chen who has received the highest marks, but Brown. However, it is impressive to see how much Chen’s scores have risen, and the deterioration of Hanyu’s scores is also very significant.
And, even for the choreographic sequence, I looked at the best four executions for 18 skaters. As I did for the StSq, I considered the 2020 Cup of China as a national championship and therefore I didn’t consider it. If I had done that, Boyang Jin’s score percentage would have dropped from 66.67% of the old code of points to 63.80%, a drop of 2.87%, not the 8.17% we see in the graph. And the overall average would have increased by 8.16%, not 7.87%.
There are only six skaters who have seen their scores drop (but for Kolyada we could say that they remained stable), while 12 have seen their scores rise. The one who has seen his grades drop the most is Hanyu. I notice that Jason Brown, who was already the skater who received the highest scores, saw his scores go up, so it’s possible that the scores will go up even if they’re already high. I also notice that Brown is exactly 8 days younger than Hanyu, so age has little to do with these scores. As for Keegan Messing, who is older than Hanyu by almost three years, he has had impressive growth, surpassed only by that of Chen and Rizzo, and, according to the judges, has become better than Hanyu.
Again I excluded the skaters who have never participated in the Olympic Games or the Grand Prix Final and redid the graph.
Looking only at the best skaters, it is even more evident that according to the judges almost all of the skaters improved while Hanyu got worse, with two skaters passing him and all the others coming closer to him.

In my check on the elements executed by Nathan Chen I’m now at the StSq. After I watched the CCoSp, the CCSp, the FCCoSp, the FSSp and the FCSp.
At this point I don’t think it will surprise anyone to find that Chen’s scores in the step sequence (percentage of GOE, regardless of the level) have gone up, whether if we look at the top ten executions or if we look look at the top four executions.
I will also look at Jason Brown and Shoma Uno shortly, albeit in less detail than Chen and Hanyu, but I wondered how their scores changed with the two scoring systems. It is true that unlike the other Brown has never stood on a world or Olympic podium (I do not consider team medals in this), but he stood on the podium at the Four Continents Championship with both score codes, and with both score codes he qualified for the Grand Prix final, so we can say that he has always remained more or less at the same level. Strong skater, even if not one of those who write the history of figure skating. These are their ten best executions of the step sequence.
Fascinating. This graph tells us that, according to the judges, the only one of these four skaters whose technique deteriorated is Hanyu. Up until PyeongChang he was the best, then he became the worst.
Hanyu’s scores have dropped. Was it something that only happened to him, or did it happen to other skaters as well? Maybe it’s Brown, Chen and Uno who have improved, but overall the marks for all the skaters have remained stable. With this in mind, I looked at 18 skaters, chosen on the basis that they had participated in several international competitions with both scoring codes, so that comparisons could be made. In this case I was based on only the four best executions, simply because transcribing data is a long and tedious job. I have watched all the international competitions, with the exception of the Japan Open because I will never be able to consider it a serious competition. I made one exception: I ignored the 2020 Cup of China for Boyang Jin. This is because Jin received some remarkably high marks on the occasion, which stand out from his other marks, and since the judges were all Chinese I pretended that this was a national competition and not a national competition, and I did not consider those marks. If I had, with his four best executions of the step sequence with the score code +5/-5, Jin would have received 69.62% of the maximum possible GOE, up from the score code +3/ -3 by 0.57%. Small, but still a growth.
First I publish the graph with the 18 skaters I checked. I’ve changed the type of chart to better show which scores have gone up and which have gone down. The thickest lines are dedicated to Chen, Hanyu and the average. Since this graph is a bit complicated, I reproduce it below excluding some skaters. Version 1: 18 skaters.
Out of 18 skaters, 13 saw their scores go up and only 5 saw their scores go down. This is because I ignored a competition for Jin, otherwise the numbers would have been 14 and 4. And the one who has seen his scores drop (much) more markedly is Hanyu. As for Chen, he is not the one who has seen his scores grow the most because given the scores he had received with the +3/-3 score code, he could in no way have a growth comparable to that of Zhou, Rizzo and Aymoz , but he is still one of those who has seen his scores rise the most.
In the next graph I have excluded 8 skaters because they have never participated in the Grand Prix Final or the Olympic Games: Bychenko, Kerry, Kvitelashvili, Nguyen, Rizzo, Samarin, Tanaka and Vasiljevs. With the 10 strongest skaters, the result is this:
The graph is more readable and, if we look at only the strongest skaters, the severity with which Hanyu was judged becomes even more evident.
ISU today released its 2022 FINANCIAL REPORT. Inside, the document contains an interesting passage.
If the ISU struggles to remember and write the name of Japan’s most popular figure skater, I will remind them. That skater’s name is Hanyu Yuzuru, and Hanyu stepped away from competitive figure skating and the ISU after winning two Olympic golds, two world golds, setting 19 world records and making an indelible mark on figure skating, after four years he had to accept lower marks while those of all other skaters were raised. And it’s not me saying that Hanyu’s scores have dropped, it’s the scores that speak for themselves. If the ISU is concerned about leak of the public, perhaps it should ask why the public has grown disaffected with competitions that have stopped rewarding the quality of what was being done on the ice.

In my check on the elements executed by Nathan Chen I’m now at the last spin, the FCSp. I’ve already watched the CCoSp, the CCSp, the FCCoSp and the FSSp.
It’s not a spin that Chen has done often, and the scores aren’t particularly high, however, even in this case, Chen’s scores have risen.

In my check on the elements executed by Nathan Chen I’m now at the spins. After the CCoSp, the CCSp and the FCCoSp, now I watch the FSSp.
The average mark has risen, both if they look at the ten best executions (or even just nine executions, given that for the last four seasons I have been forced to include in the table a spin performed at the National Championship) and if we look at the four best executions. There is a curious detail: the highest marks, and not by a small amount, arrived at the national championship. That US judges have tried to influence international judges by assigning exaggeratedly high marks? And, if this was their intention, looking at the subsequent marks, are we sure that the international judges were able not to be influenced? Sure, at the World Championship and World Team Trophy Chen received lower marks than at the National Championship, but in his entire career he had never received such high marks. But it will be a coincidence, or perhaps he has improved…

The data is clear: Chen’s scores have risen a lot. Only in one competition he skated in the United States, the U.S. Classic International of 2017, got a better score than his 10th best spin since the 2018-19 season.
I decided to compare the average marks on the best four performances received by Chen with those received by Hanyu. This is what came up:

In this case the judges’ marks have risen significantly, almost 15% if we look at the ten best executions, over 11% if we look at the four best executions.

In the last four seasons Chen has performed a solo 3Lz only six times, seven if we count one at a National Championship. However we look at the data, his worst execution of the last few seasons received a higher score than his best execution up to the 2017-18 season, and seeing that already in the autumn of 2016 he had managed to execute several 4Lz capable of receiving a very positive GOE, I don’t think the 3Lz was such a difficult jump for him. But strangely at that time he couldn’t execute 3Lz of quality, and apparently with the transition to the new scoring code he has significantly improved.
