Yuzuru Hanyu: FCSp

New post in my check on the best elements performed by Yuzuru Hanyu with the score code +3/-3 and with the score code +5/-5. If you have any doubts about the type of check I did, you can read the first post of the series, dedicated to the 4Lo. The following ones were dedicated to the 4S, the 4T in combination, the 4T, the 3A in combination, the 3A, the 3Lz, the 3F and the 3Lo. When I dealt with the CCoSp I added some explanations on spins. Later I also looked at the CSSp, and since that spin is part of the short program on Chopin’s Ballade No. 1, in the same post I looked at the marks of that program the times Hanyu completed it without making any mistakes. I wrote also about the FCCoSp and the FCSSp.

The average score has dropped by just over three points both if we look at the 10 best spins and if we look at the 4 best. And there is a curious detail. The best marks came in the 2015 Grand Prix Final. The same thing happened with the FCSSp. Did Hanyu get worse after that competition? Maybe, even if it doesn’t seem like it to me. Of course, I’m not a judge. But this gives us food for thought, especially when, precisely after that competition, Alexander Lakernik, at the time head of the ISU Technical Committee and later vice president of the federation, clearly stated that after what Hanyu had just done, the GOEs had to be revised. Unfortunately I arrived late, I started researching years later, I didn’t find the original statement but only someone who wrote about it. Everything I found is in this post. I’ll be the one being suspicious, but the fact that after that competition Hanyu’s GOE dropped seems at least suspicious to me.

Contrary to what happened with the other elements, with the FCSSp Hanyu’s score point average slightly increased, both if we look at the ten best spins and if we look at the four best spins. I wonder what happened to bring the scores down between GPF 2015 and WTT 2021. I don’t have an answer, I’m just acknowledg what happened.

Yuzuru Hanyu: CSSp

If you have any doubts about the type of check I did, you can read the first post of the series, dedicated to the 4Lo. The following ones were dedicated to the 4S, the 4T in combination, the 4T, the 3A in combination, the 3A, the 3Lz, the 3F and the 3Lo. When I dealt with the CCoSp I added some explanations on spins. The control is only on the percentage of GOE compared to the maximum obtainable, not on the level obtained from the spin.

With the CCSp, Hanyu’s scores have dropped, and by a lot. By 10.27% if we look at the ten best spins, by 16.50% if we look at the best four. This is because the four spins in which Hanyu received the highest marks, and six of the best seven were performed with the score code +3/-3.

The CSSp performed by Hanyu in Chopin’s Ballade No. 1 is especially impressive. The first time Hanyu skated that program was in the 2014-15 season, but in the first competition he made a mistake (in the short program we can say he was fine, although I don’t know how much he recovered from the injury that pushed him to giving up the Finland Trophy a month before, it was from the free skate warm up that began a very difficult period which lasted until the end of the season) and then he was never healthy. And in any case, it’s been since the 2015-16 season, especially since the third competition, the NHK Trophy, that Hanyu has demonstrated impressive superiority over his opponents. In the first two competitions he made mistakes, in the third he didn’t make any despite having complicated the layout, and he destroyed the old score code, not only for the difficulties completed but because he was able to add quality to everything. His sit spin obtained four +3 and five +2, the highest mark he obtained up to that moment, with 80.67% GOE. In the Grand Prix Final he improved, five +3, four +2, and 95.33% GOE, as well as at the World Championship. In the middle there is also the National Championship with over 90% GOE, but if I have enough international competitions i ignore the National Championship, and I did it this time too. Let’s Go Crazy, the following year, received lower scores, that program has always been scored badly, and it is not clear why, given that the errors arrived on the 4Lo or on the combination, the other scores also dropped. But when he returned to Chopin, in the 2017 Autumn Classic, he received six +3, one +2 and 100% GOE. Perfection. The Rostelecom Cup short program contains a couple of mistakes, a bad day happens to everyone, but in PyeongChang he received seven +3, two +2 and 95.33% GOE. In five of the last six international competitions in which Hanyu has performed Ballad No. 1, he has achieved over 90% of the maximum GOE possible, and the only time he has received a lower score was in a bad program. In the Four Continents Championship he did zero mistakes. That program was perfect. Yet the marks are two +5, five +4 and two +3, for a GOE of 80%. According to the judges, the best Hanyu after PyeongChang is not at the same level as the December 2015 Hanyu.

To understand exactly how Hanyu was scored, I took a little closer look at that short program, Chopin’s Ballade, from the 2015 NHK Trophy onwards. This is the Total segment Score, the first thing that gets noticed.

As mentioned, Hanyu made mistakes at the Rostelecom Cup, it is normal for his score to be lower. For the rest, the lowest score is the first, that of the NHK Trophy 2015. For those who cannot read a protocol, the differences are so small, 2.16 points of difference between the highest and lowest score, with the score of the Four Continents Championship 2020 which is surpassed only by that of the Autumn Classic International 2017, which would not be worth thinking about. But if we start looking at the details, things change. Since I’m interested in quality, I excluded the Rostelecom Cup from the checks and focused only on the six competitions in which Hanyu made no mistakes. These are the components.

The competition with the lowest score is the 2015 NHK Trophy. In the next competition, the 2015 Grand Prix Final, Hanyu got his highest score, then the score dropped. They always went down, competition after competition he received slightly lower scores. How is it that in the two competition of the 2017-2018 season Hanyu’s overall score is higher than in the last two competition of the 2015-16 season if the PCS are down? Because the base value has risen. Before, Hanyu only performed the triple axel in the second half of the program, then he also moved the 4T+3T combination to the second half, and increased his base value by 1.46 points.

The lowest base value is the latest, the change is related to the new rules. The base value of triple and quadruple jumps has been lowered, and inevitably the base value is lower. However, the value of the GOE has been raised. Since two different scales are used, to compare the scores assigned with the score code +3/-3 to those assigned with the code +5/-5, here too I used the percentage of GOE compared to the maximum obtainable. And this is the result:

Hanyu achieved the highest score at the 2015 Grand Prix Final. According to the judges, the Hanyu of the 2020 Four Continents Championship is a much worse skater. I did the competition-by-competition and element-by-element graphs, but I’m leaving them alone at the moment. I limit myself to a graph comparing the single elements in the Grand Prix Final and the Four Continents. In the table above I entered the data of the Grand Prix Final: element, base value, score received by Hanyu in the GOE, maximum possible GOE, percentage of GOE received by Hanyu compared to the maximum possible. Attention to the PCS: to have comparable values and put everything in the same graph, I calculated the percentage also in the components. With a maximum possible mark of 50.00 points in the short program, receiving 49.14 points means receiving 98.28% of the maximum possible mark. I did the same for the Four Continents too, the data is in the second table. In the third I reported only the percentage for both races. The graph is based only on this last table, specifically on the part with the red border, where the percentages of each element are entered. The last column, which I didn’t include in the graph, shows us how much Hanyu’s scores went up or down from December 2015 to February 2020. The last row, and the column with slightly different colors, is the average of the seven elements and of the PCS. I’d say the graph speaks for itself.

Yuzuru Hanyu: CCoSp

English/Italiano

English

New stage in my check on the best elements performed by Yuzuru Hanyu with the score code +3/-3 and with the score code +5/-5. If you have any doubts about the type of check I did, you can read the first post of the series, dedicated to the 4Lo. The following ones were dedicated to the 4S, the 4T in combination, the 4T, the 3A in combination, the 3A, the 3Lz, the 3F and the 3Lo. Watching the 3T, 3S or doubles makes no sense. Hanyu stopped performing doubles when he added 4T to his program in his first senior season, and dropped 3S in the 2012-13 season when he started doing 4S. So if singles, doubles, or toe loops and triple salchows are found in his programs, they are popped jumps, and at this moment I am not interested in the mistakes. That’s why I switched to the spins.

The first one I looked at is the CCoSp, not worrying about the level, something that is identified by the technical panel, but only the GOE, then the judges’ marks. For a while the ISU used the acronym CCoSp3p4 (or CCoSp3p3 if level 3), however it is always the same spin. With the score code +3/-3, the GOE for all spins was 0.50 with a +1, 1.00 with a +2, 1.50 with a +3, while with the score code +5/-5 the GOE is parameterized to the base value, therefore for the calculations it is always necessary to check the type of spin and its level, because the value of the GOE changes. These are the marks Hanyu received for his top ten CCoSp (best in the sense of GOE percentage of the maximum possible, not in the sense of the highest overall score, since the score is also related to the base value) with both codes of score:

The average for the ten best spins has dropped slightly. If we only look at the best four spins, the average has dropped more, even if the difference is not huge. The thing that stands out to me is that the spin that received the highest evaluations with the +5/-5 system is the second one that Hanyu performed with this score code, the first among the 10 best. The second is the next one, then Hanyu’s scores dropped. In other words, when Hanyu was the new olympic champion he received high marks, then he performed a double salchw in the World Championship short program – and remember that for the mark in the GOE each element must be evaluated independently, a mistake on an element shouldn’t influence the evaluation of the other elements, but often the judges allow themselves to be influenced – and his marks have dropped. At the World Championship he was awarded only the silver, and I wonder if this didn’t make the judges think that all in all Hanyu wasn’t so strong and that he deserved high but not perfect marks. In fact, 80% of the scores, and on the best occasions he received just over 80% of the GOE, means +4. Good, but not very good.

Yuzuru Hanyu: 3Lo

In my check of the best elements performed by Yuzuru Hanyu with the score code +3/-3 and with the score code +5/-5 I arrived at 3Lo. If you have any doubts about the type of check I did, you can read the first post of the series, dedicated to the 4Lo. The following ones were dedicated to the 4S, the 4T in combination, the 4T, the 3A in combination, the 3A, the 3Lz and the 3F.

If we look at the average score of the 10 best 3Lo performed by Hanyu – in truth with the score code +5/-5 he only performed 8 – the vote has risen. And the average has risen, even if only slightly, if I consider only the best 6 jumps landed with the score code +3/-3, and I exclude the jumps performed at the National Championship with the score code +5/-5.

However, if I consider only the best 4 jumps, the average has dropped, even if by very little. This is because Hanyu performed the two jumps that received the highest percentage of score with the old score code.

In this case the difference is minimal, but I think it is interesting to make another consideration.

Hanyu’s 3Lo is a very beautiful jump, performed without the slightest preparation and with a very soft landing. Yet the scores do not testify to it. This is because judges find the 3Lo to be an easy jump, at least for men, and tend to award lower marks. I already had this feeling, but to confirm it I did a simple check on SkatingScores. I did eight different searches, one for each of the triples and one each for the 4T and 4S. I ignored the other quads because they were done far fewer times. The search was set to all major international competitions, including the World Team Trophy, for all skaters. The order was from the highest average GOE. On the site we can see the 35 best executions for each jump. At this point I counted the number of +3 (or +5) that appeared in the lists. If I’ve counted correctly, the result is this:

 Jump+3 (until 2017-18)+5 (from 2018-19)
3T91
3S153
3Lo387
3F5861
3Lz9321
3A22795
4T18337
4S14668

Going down, the numbers almost always grow. Apparently skaters have been able to achieve perfection more often on 3S than 3T, more often on 3Lo than 3S, more often on 3F than 3Lo, more often on 3Lz than 3F (one of only two exceptions being found here, with the score code +5/-5, but it must be said that with the new score code Jason Brown offsets the whole table, with a dominance that has no comparison, not even Hanyu with 3A has ever been equally appreciated), more often on the 3A than on the 3Lz. Moving on to quadruples, the numbers are inevitably lower than those of 3A, also because it is mandatory to perform an axel both in the short program and in the free skate, all the strongest skaters perform the triple axel, but according to the judges the skaters have put a lot more quality into the 4T than they put into the 3T, or even the 3Lz. The 4S received a much lower number of +3 than the 4T, but it must be said that until the 2010-11 season only 51 quadruple salchows were performed, an average of just over 6 per season, while already in the2004-05 season were performed 37 quadruple toe loop, the following season the number had risen to 43, and remained 43 in the 2007-08 season. At this point I stopped counting the toe loop. Were performed many more 4T than 4S, therefore the fact that the difference in the number of +3 received by the two jumps is so low confirms the impression that the judges tend (even unconsciously) to assign higher marks to the jumps they judge to be more difficult .

So what happened? I can’t prove it, but I suspect that with the +3/-3 score code the judges gave Hanyu low marks because it was just a 3Lo, not a difficult jump, and therefore for them it didn’t deserve high marks. Then, with the switch to the +5/-5 scoring code, Hanyu was already receiving average marks, and since the judges never found his skating bad, just good but not great, the marks remained more or less unchanged.

Yuzuru Hanyu: 3F

English/Italiano

English

New post of my check on the best elements performed by Yuzuru Hanyu with the score code +3/-3 and with the score code +5/-5. If you have any doubts about the type of check I did, the explanations are in the first post of the series, dedicated to the 4Lo. The following ones were dedicated to the 4S, the 4T in combination, the 4T, the 3A in combination, the 3A and the 3Lz.

For the 3F an average does not make sense. In the last four seasons Hanyu has performed it only three times, and moreover in two cases he had a sprained ankle and in the third he was afraid of getting hurt, since just before starting to skate he had found a very deep hole in the ice. However, I wonder why the 3F of the Olympic Games received such a low GOE since it is absolutely effortless, perfectly executed and with the three before the jump preceded by two hops with half rotation and a mohawk. And if it seems little to someone, I remember that these moves are done in those only three seconds that separate landing of the 3A+2T combination and the take off of the 3F. That +4, those six +3 and those two +2 for this jump have no justification. Beijing’s 3F was deemed worse than Hanyu’s best seventeen 3F in international competition with the score code +3/-3 (yes, I checked also the best 3F that does not enter my table).

Hanyu received +1.51 GOE points. Jason Brown for his 3F received +2.35. Brown did a venda just before the flip entry, but prior to that venda there was an 8 second run-up with just a pair of mohawks and several crossover. I’m not disputing Brown’s score, that venda is enough to say there’s a difficult entry, but why the difference in score? The sureness in the flight phase, the fluidity in the landing, are the same. Hanyu jumped too few 3F to have a meaningful statistic, but my impression is that his scores have dropped.

Yuzuru Hanyu: 3Lz

English/Italiano

English

With the elimination of a jump from the free skate wanted by the new rules, Yuzuru Hanyu excluded the 3Lz from his programs. In fact, he only performed it in the 2019-20 season, and not even in all competitions, since the Four Continents Championship his lutz was a quadruple. For this reason, in my check on the best elements performed by Hanyu, for the last four years I have only four 3Lz. There are no really high scores in this case, and I wonder why, because some of Hanyu’s triple lutzes are very good. Even so, the tendency to lower his marks is confirmed.

I am perplexed by many marks, even those received with the +3/-3 system, such as the 3Lz of the 2017 World Championship, where Hanyu received two +3, six +2 and a +1, but the worst scored is the 3Lz of the 2019 Grand Prix Final, which obtained an average mark below +3 (in the protocol there are two +4, three +3 and four +2), and I don’t understand how the judges managed to assign certain marks.

Yuzuru Hanyu: 3A

English/Italiano

English

New step in my check on the GOE scores received by Hanyu. Previous posts are dedicated to 4Lo (with explanations of my working method), 4S, 4T combinations, 4T and 3A combinations.

In training seminars for judges, the ISU indicates Hanyu’s 3A as a perfect jump, deserving of the maximum GOE. When Hanyu did the jump at his best, did he really get unanimous +3 under the old judging system, unanimous +5 under the new one?

Until the PyeongChang Olympic Games, nine of Hanyu’s 3A in international competitions were judged perfect (plus two at the National Championship). After that, only one of his jumps, that of the Skate Canada 2019 short program, was judged perfect, and even if we look at the National Championship the total would remain one.

Just to underline the quality of Hanyu’s triple axel, if the average marks of the top ten 3A performed by Hanyu with the +5/-5 score code is just over 90%, I looked at how many times Hanyu got a GOE higher than 90% of the maximum GOE possible with the score code +3/-3 and I listed the (international) competitions that didn’t enter the top ten list in the table with the red border. The total with the score code +3/-3 is 17, with the score code +5/-5 it is 6.

With their marks the judges told Hanyu that his 3A has gotten worse, and I would like them to explain to him, the press and all the fans why they didn’t awarded the unanimous +5 to the triple axel of the short program of the Rostelecom Cup 2018, of the 2019 World Championship, of the 2019 Autumn Classic International and of the 2020 Four Continents, and to the triple axel of the 2020 Four Continents free Skate, of the 2021 World Team Trophy and of the 2022 Olympic Games.

Yuzuru Hanyu: 3A combinations

English/Italiano

English

In my check of the elements performed by Yuzuru Hanyu I went as far as triple axel in combination. If you need to know what kind of work I did you can read the post dedicated to 4Lo. Here are also the posts dedicated to the 4S, the 4T in combination and the 4T.

I wanted to do a different check for each type of combination, but I found myself in difficulty. In the last four years Hanyu has performed the 3A+3T combination only three times in international competitions, plus once in a national championship. The 3A+2T combination is a little more frequent, five executions in international competitions, two in national championships. However, we are far from the ten executions of the previous tables. And then there are three combinations 3A+1Eu+3S and two sequences 4T+3A+SEQ, all made in international competitions. The sequences (which in any case Hanyu only performed in the 2018-19 season, therefore it is not possible to make comparisons with the score code +3/-3) came under my check on the 4T combinations, for the rest I decided to group together all the combinations opened by a 3A, regardless of the jumps Hanyu executed afterwards, and to select from here the ten elements with the best GOE.

Before the table of combinations and the graph, I publish the data – forcibly reduced – of the various types of combinations, and any combination I look at, regardless of the number of competitions considered, 10 or less, depending on how many times Hanyu has made that specific combination in the last four years, with the score code +3/3 Hanyu’s marks were higher. I considered the combinations performed at the National Championship only when the +5/-5 score code was in effect, if I had done it even earlier, the average score of the combinations performed with the +3/-3 score code would have gone up, given that on one occasion Hanyu received a +2.80 (93.33%).

Combination+3/-3+5/-5
3A+3T74,3035,69
3A+3T best 4)82,1435,69
3A+3T (best 3, no national)84,1143,75
3A+2T72,8754,75
3A+2T (best 7)77,5254,75
3A+2T (best 5, no national)80,9345,25
3A+1Eu(1Lo)+3S61,2359,00
3A+1Eu(1Lo)+3S (best 3)77,7859,00

Considering all types of combinations, I managed to have ten with a positive GOE for the last four years as well. From here I made table and graph. As with the other jump elements, at the bottom left I have listed the four best combinations performed with both score codes.

This time I inserted another small table that I usually don’t insert, the one with the red border. In the top ten combinations performed with the +3/-3 score code, Hanyu had an average GOE of 84.77%, with the +5/-5 score code it dropped to 55.21%. True, for the last few seasons I have had little choice, but in the table of competitions up to PyeongChang there are four other combinations in which Hanyu has received over 70% of the maximum GOE, something he has only managed to do twice in the last two seasons and only in national competitions, never in international competitions (in 2020, +2.74, corresponding to 74.25% and in 2021, +3.31, corresponding to 82.75%, however marks lower than the three best obtained internationally with the score code +3/-3). I would like the judges to explain to me what was missing to assign the +5 to the 3A+3T combination performed by Hanyu in the 4CC 2020 freestyle, or to the 3A+2T combinations of the WTT 2021 and the 2022 Olympic Games. However we want to look at the data, in the last four seasons Hanyu received lower scores.

Combinazione+3/-3+5/-5
3A+3T74,3035,69
3A+3T best 4)82,1435,69
3A+3T (best 3, no Campionato nazionale)84,1143,75
3A+2T72,8754,75
3A+2T (best 7)77,5254,75
3A+2T (best 5, no Campionato nazionale)80,9345,25
3A+1Eu(1Lo)+3S61,2359,00
3A+1Eu(1Lo)+3S (best 3)77,7859,00
