I confess that, having arrived at Shoma Uno, I got tired of transcribing data. The graphs are nice to look at, writing down the scores to make them is a tedious job. So I made some graphs, then ran out of patience and stopped. Not entirely, because I wanted to do a comparison of skaters a little broader than just a comparison between Yuzuru Hanyu and Nathan Chen, so at some point I stopped looking at the ten best executions for each element, but kept looking at the four best executions. So for now I’m reporting what I’ve done, some graphics dedicated to Uno, something less dedicated to Jason Brown, and even less dedicated to Boyang Jin. When I’m done with looking at the individual skaters, I’ll move on to the comparisons.

I remember that In the first post of the series, dedicated to Hanyu’s 4Lo, I explained how I worked.The following ones were dedicated to the 4S, the 4T in combination, the 4T, the 3A in combination, the 3A, the 3Lz, the 3F, and the 3Lo. When I watched the CCoSp I added some explanations on spins. Later I also looked at the CSSp, and since that spin is part of the short program on Chopin’s Ballade No. 1, in the same post I looked at the marks of that program the times Hanyu completed it without making any mistakes. I wrote also about the FCCoSp, the FCSSp, the FCSp, the StSq and the ChSq1. After checked Hanyu’s elements, I switched to Nathan Chen’s elements. First the 4Lz (as a solo jump or as the first jump of a combination), then the 4F in combination, the solo 4F, the 4S, the 4T combinations, the solo 4T, the 3A and the 3Lz, in combination and as a solo jump. After I watched the CCoSp, the CCSp, the FCCoSp, the FSSp, the FCSp, the StSq and the ChSq1.

According to the judges, not only did Uno improve on 4F, but it is also a good jump given that with the score code +5/-5 he received several times marks above 60%, i.e. above +3. Details such as prerotation and full blade are obviously abstract concepts, which have nothing to do with scores. Naive me that I had not understood.

On 4Lo Uno improved if we look at the ten best executions – at the beginning he received very few positive GOE – slightly worsened if we look only at the four best executions. Of course, we have to behave exactly like the technical panel and not look at whether the rotations have been completed in the air or on the ice.

For the 4T in combination I looked at two options, in combination with the 3T and in combination with the 2T. He has made few combinations of 4T+3T in recent seasons, and in this case his scores have dropped.

In the 4T+2T combination Uno’s average remained stable (very slight improvement) if we look at the ten best executions, it got worse if we look at the four best executions. Since I made the graphs, I’m publishing them, but in reality, in the comparison between skaters, I have combined all the combinations that start with a 4T in a single category.

The solo 4T received lower marks no matter how many executions we look at.

On 3A I decided to cut it short, so I stopped making graphs. Uno’s marks have dropped, and by a lot, in the combination 3A+1Eu+3F (or 3A+1Lo+3F) both if we look at the ten best executions and if we look at the four best. The same goes, albeit with a much less pronounced drop, if we look at 3A alone. For 3Lo, I only watched the four best executions, and the scores dropped here too.

Confesso che, arrivata a Shoma Uno, mi sono stancata di trascrivere dati. I grafici sono carini da guardare, la trascrizione dei punteggi per realizzarli è un lavoro noioso. Perciò ho fatto qualche grafico, poi ho esaurito la pazienza e mi sono fermata. Non del tutto, perché volevo fare un confronto fra pattinatori un po’ più vasto di un semplice confronto fra Yuzuru Hanyu e Nathan Chen, perciò a un certo punto ho smesso di guardare le dieci migliori esecuzioni per ciascun elemento, ma ho continuato a guardare le quattro migliori esecuzioni. Perciò per ora riporto quello che ho realizzato, qualche grafico dedicato a Uno, qualcosa meno dedicato a Jason Brown, e ancora meno dedicato a Boyang Jin. Quando avrò finito con lo sguardo ai singoli pattinatori passerò ai confronti.

Ricordo che ho spiegato il modo in cui ho lavorato nel primo post della serie, quello dedicato al 4Lo di Yuzuru Hanyu. In seguito ho guardato i voti del 4S, del 4T in combinazione, del 4T, del 3A in combinazione, del 3A, del 3Lz, del 3F e del 3Lo. Quando mi sono occupata della CCoSp ho aggiunto qualche spiegazione sulle trottole. In seguito ho guardato anche la CSSp, e visto che quella trottola fa parte del programma corto sulla Ballata N. 1 di Chopin, ho guardato i voti di quel programma le volte in cui Hanyu lo ha completato senza commettere errori. In seguito ho guardato la FCCoSp, la FCSSp, la FCSp, la StSq e la ChSq1. Dopo aver finito con Hanyu sono passata agli elementi eseguiti da Nathan Chen, a partire dal 4Lz (da solo o in combinazione) e proseguendo con il 4F in combinazione, il 4F da solo, il 4S, il 4T in combinazione, il 4T da solo, il 3A e il 3Lz, in combinazione e da solo. In seguito ho guardato la CCoSp, la CCSp, la FCCoSp, la FSSp, la FCSp, la StSq e la ChSq1.

Secondo i giudici, non solo Uno è migliorato sul 4F, ma si tratta pure un bel salto visto che con il codice di punteggi +5/-5 ha ricevuto parecchie volte voti superiori al 60%, vale a dire superiori al +3. Dettagli come prerotazione e full blade evidentemente sono concetti astratti, che nulla hanno a che vedere con i punteggi. Ingenua io che non l’avevo capito.

Sul 4Lo Uno è migliorato se guardiamo le dieci migliori esecuzioni – per forza, all’inizio di GOE positivi ne ha ricevuti davvero pochi – lievemente peggiorato se guardiamo solo le quattro migliori esecuzioni. Certo, ci dobbiamo comportare esattamente come il pannello tecnico e non guardare se le rotazioni sono state completate nell’aria o sul ghiaccio.

Per il 4T in combinazione ho guardato due opzioni, in combinazione con il 3T e in combinazione con il 2T. Di combinazione 4T+3T ne ha fatte pochine nelle ultime stagioni, e in questo caso i suoi voti si sono abbassati.

Nella combinazione 4T+2T la media dei voti di Uno è rimasta stabile (lievissimo miglioramento) se guardiamo le dieci migliori esecuzioni, è peggiorata se guardiamo le quattro migliori esecuzioni. Visto che i grafici li avevo fatti li pubblico, ma in realtà nel confronto fra pattinatori ho accomunato in un’unica categoria tutte le combinazioni che iniziano con un 4T.

Il 4T da solo ha ricevuto voti più bassi, indipendentemente da quante esecuzioni guardiamo.

Sul 3A ho deciso di tagliare corto, perciò ho smesso di fare grafici. I voti di Uno sono scesi, e di tanto, nella combinazione 3A+1Eu+3F (o 3A+1Lo+3F) sia se guardiamo le dieci migliori esecuzioni che se guardiamo le quattro migliori. Stesso discorso, anche se con un calo molto meno accentuato, se guardiamo il 3A da solo. Per il 3Lo ho guardato solo le quattro migliori esecuzioni, e anche qui i voti sono scesi.
