New post in my check on the best elements performed by Yuzuru Hanyu with the score code +3/-3 and with the score code +5/-5. In the first post of the series, dedicated to the 4Lo, I explained how I worked.The following ones were dedicated to the 4S, the 4T in combination, the 4T, the 3A in combination, the 3A, the 3Lz, the 3F and the 3Lo. After the jumps I watched the spins. When I dealt with the CCoSp I added some explanations on spins. Later I also looked at the CSSp, and since that spin is part of the short program on Chopin’s Ballade No. 1, in the same post I looked at the marks of that program the times Hanyu completed it without making any mistakes. I wrote also about the FCCoSp, the FCSSp and the FCSp.

After checking the spins performed by Hanyu before and after the spring of 2018, I moved on to the step sequence. I recall that until the end of the 2017-18 season the maximum GOE for a level 1, 2 or 3 step sequence was 1.50 points, for a level 4 step sequence it was 2.10 points. From the 2018-19 season, with the GOE parameterized to the base value of the individual elements, it has become 1.65 points for a level 3 step sequence, 1.95 points for a level 4 step sequence. The level 4 step sequence it is the only element that, with the new score code, has seen its GOE go down. But didn’t the ISU want to enhance skating skills? No, maybe not, basically he also removed the request to perform a step in the jump preceded by a step not in combination in the short program, so perhaps knowing how to skate has gone out of fashion and is no longer required, nor is it worth enhancing the steps if still someone persists in wanting to do them, or to do them well where they are required (and that the steps are not important was reaffirmed a year ago with the elimination of the step sequence in the junior free skate).

All right. Perhaps the ISU should wonder why there are fewer and fewer spectators at their competitions, but self-criticism is never easy. Let’s go back to Hanyu’s step sequence. I only looked at the ones marked as StSq, so not the CiSt or SlSt he did until the 2011-12 season, when the rules changed. And I looked at the percentage of GOE he received compared to the maximum possible GOE, not the total score he got, which means that some of these step sequences are level 4, some are level 3, and in 2015 there is also a level 2 step sequence. What interests me is the quality. Can Hanyu do the steps well?

According to the judges Hanyu has definitely gotten worse. If with the score code +3/-3 the way he executed the step sequence was judged perfect in eight international competitions, and in two others (actually there are three, 95.24% of the Rostelecom Cup 2017 did not entered my table) he achieved over 95% of the maximum GOE, with the score code +5/-5, his maximum GOE was 91.79%, and only on three other occasions did he achieve over 90 % of maximum GOE (with the previous score code he had succeeded on 17 occasions). And that Hanyu’s scores have dropped like this is a trait of him. I looked at the best four step sequences for 18 skaters, the ones who had enough competitions with both score codes for a comparison to make sense. Only five skaters have seen their scores drop, and Hanyu’s scores are the ones that have dropped the most. I will republish the table with all the data later.

Nuova tappa nel mio controllo sui migliori elementi eseguiti da Yuzuru Hanyu con il codice di punteggi +3/-3 e con il codice di punteggi +5/-5. Nel primo post della serie, dedicato al 4Lo, ho spiegato il mio metodo. Ho dedicato i post successivi al 4S, al 4T in combinazione, al 4T, al 3A in combinazione, al 3A, al 3Lz, al 3F e al 3Lo. Finiti i salti sono passata alle trottole. Quando mi sono occupata della CCoSp ho aggiunto qualche spiegazione sulle trottole. In seguito ho guardato anche la CSSp, e visto che quella trottola fa parte del programma corto sulla Ballata N. 1 di Chopin, ho guardato i voti di quel programma le volte in cui Hanyu lo ha completato senza commettere errori. In seguito ho guardato la FCCoSp, la FCSSp e la FCSp.

Finito di controllare le trottole eseguite da Hanyu prima e dopo la primavera del 2018, sono passata alla sequenza di passi. Ricordo che fino alla fine della stagione 2017-18 il GOE massimo per una sequenza di passi di livello 1, 2 o 3 era di 1.50 punti, per una sequenza di passi di livello 4 era di 2.10 punti. Dalla stagione 2018-19, con il GOE parametrato al valore base dei singoli elementi, è diventato di 1.65 punti per una sequenza di passi di livello 3, di 1.95 punti per una sequenza di passi di livello 4. La sequenza di passi di livello 4 è l’unico elemento che, con il nuovo codice di punteggi, ha visto scendere il suo GOE. Ma l’ISU non voleva valorizzare le capacità di pattinata? No, forse no, in fondo ha tolto anche la richiesta di eseguire un passo nel salto preceduto da passo non in combinazione nel programma corto, quindi forse saper pattinare è passato di moda e non viene più richiesto, né vale la pena valorizzare i passi se ancora qualcuno si ostina a volerli fare, o a farli bene lì dove sono richiesti (e che i passi non siano importanti è stato ribadito un anno fa con l’eliminazione della sequenza di passi nel programma libero junior).

Va bene. Forse l’ISU si dovrebbe chiedere perché ci sono sempre meno spettatori alle loro gare, ma fare autocritica non è mai semplice. Torniamo alla sequenza di passi di Hanyu. Ho guardato solo quelle marcate come StSq, quindi non le CiSt o le SlSt che ha eseguito fino alla stagione 2011-12, quando è cambiato il regolamento. E ho guardato la percentuale di GOE che ha ricevuto rispetto al GOE massimo possibile, non il punteggio totale da lui ottenuto, il che significa che alcune di queste sequenze di passi sono di livello 4, alcune di livello 3, e nel 2015 ce n’è anche una di livello 2. Quello che mi interessa è la qualità. Hanyu sa eseguire bene i passi?

A quanto pare secondo i giudici Hanyu è decisamente peggiorato. Se con il codice di punteggi +3/-3 il modo in cui ha eseguito la sequenza di passi è stato giudicato perfetto in otto competizioni internazionali, e in altre due (in realtà sono tre, il 95,24% della Rostelecom Cup 2017 non è entrato nella mia tabella) ha ottenuto oltre il 95% del GOE massimo, con il codice di punteggi +5/-5, il suo GOE massimo è stato un 91,79%, e solo in altre tre occasioni ha ottenuto oltre il 90% del GOE massimo (con il precedente codice di punteggi ci era riuscito in 17 occasioni). E che i voti di Hanyu siano scesi in questo modo, è una caratteristica tutta sua. Ho guardato le migliori quattro sequenze di passi per 18 pattinatori, quelli che hanno partecipato ad abbastanza gare con entrambi i codici di punteggio perché un confronto abbia senso. Sono solo cinque i pattinatori che hanno visto scendere i loro voti, e i voti di Hanyu sono quelli che sono scesi di più. Più avanti la tabella con tutti i dati e il relativo grafico.
