I continue my check on the elements executed by Nathan Chen. After the 4Lz (as a solo jump or as the first jump of a combination) I switched to the 4F in combination and then to the solo 4F. Now it’s time for the 4S. In the first post of the series, dedicated to Hanyu’s 4Lo, I explained how I worked.The following ones were dedicated to the 4S, the 4T in combination, the 4T, the 3A in combination, the 3A, the 3Lz, the 3F and the 3Lo. When I watched the CCoSp I added some explanations on spins. Later I also looked at the CSSp, and since that spin is part of the short program on Chopin’s Ballade No. 1, in the same post I looked at the marks of that program the times Hanyu completed it without making any mistakes. I wrote also about the FCCoSp, the FCSSp, the FCSp, the StSq and the ChSq1.

Chen favors toe assisted jumps. It’s not a criticism, I’m not implying anything with this sentence, I’m just stating a fact. Chen’s worst jump is an edge jump, the axel, and his 3A is pretty ugly. He sometimes did 4Lo, but not that often, while he did quite a lot of 4Lz and 4F. As for the 4S, for a couple of seasons he struggled a lot. In my table there are five executions with positive GOE and five with negative GOE, in three cases even the minimum GOE. Then he stabilized it and his mistakes became much rarer.

With a situation like this, comparing the top ten executions with the +3/-3 scoring system and the +5/-5 scoring system doesn’t make much sense, it is obvious that the marks have gone up. That’s why I prefer to limit myself to looking at the four best performances. With the old score code I also averaged two executions at the National Championship, one of these executions is the one that earned him the highest mark. I usually ignore scores in the National Championship. In this case I did an exception because his executions, especially those with positive GOE, are few. But I made an exception in a bit a strange way.

I want to understand if Chen’s scores have risen, remained stable or dropped. I should use the same criteria with the two score codes. But I want the answers to my doubts to come from data, not from my desires. So even though with the +5/-5 score code Chen had two of his best four scores at the National Championship, I excluded those scores from the average, knowing that this would result in a lower average.

Result? Up to the 2017-18 season, with even two 4S made at the National Championship raising the percentage, Chen achieved 52.43% of the maximum GOE. Since the 2018-19 season, excluding two 4S at the National Championship that would have raised his average, Chen has achieved an average GOE of 74.59%. Not only has Chen’s jump become more stable. According to the judges, the quality that Chen manages to put into his 4S has increased by a lot.

Proseguo il mio controllo sugli elementi eseguiti da Nathan Chen. Dopo il 4Lz (da solo o in combinazione) sono passata al 4F in combinazione e poi al 4F. Ora è la volta del 4S. Ricordo che ho già spiegato il modo in cui ho lavorato quando ho controllato i voti ricevuti da Hanyu sul 4Lo. Ho dedicato i post successivi al 4S, al 4T in combinazione, al 4T, al 3A in combinazione, al 3A, al 3Lz, al 3F e al 3Lo. Quando mi sono occupata della CCoSp ho aggiunto qualche spiegazione sulle trottole. In seguito ho guardato anche la CSSp, e visto che quella trottola fa parte del programma corto sulla Ballata N. 1 di Chopin, ho guardato i voti di quel programma le volte in cui Hanyu lo ha completato senza commettere errori. In seguito ho guardato la FCCoSp, la FCSSp, la FCSp, la StSq e la ChSq1.

Chen predilige i salti puntati. Non è una critica, non sto implicando nulla con questa frase, sto solamente constatando un fatto. Il salto peggiore di Chen è un salto staccato dal filo, l’axel, e il suo 3A è abbastanza brutto. Qualche volta ha fatto il 4Lo, ma non tanto spesso, mentre di 4Lz e 4F ne ha fatti parecchi. Quanto al 4S, per un paio di stagioni ci ha lottato parecchio. Nella mia tabella ci sono cinque esecuzioni con GOE positivo e cinque con GOE negativo, in tre casi addirittura il minimo. Poi lo ha stabilizzato e gli errori sono diventati molto più rari.

Con una situazione così, paragonare le dieci migliori esecuzioni con il sistema di punteggi +3/-3 e con il sistema +5/-5 non ha molto senso, è ovvio che i voti sono saliti. Per questo preferisco limitarmi a guardare le quattro migliori esecuzioni. Con il vecchio codice di punteggi ho inserito nella media anche due esecuzioni al Campionato nazionale, una di queste esecuzioni è quella che gli ha fruttato il suo voto più alto. Di solito ignoro i voti al Campionato nazionale. In questo caso ha fatto un’eccezione perché le esecuzioni, soprattutto quelle con GOE positivo, sono poche. Però ho fatto un’eccezione in un modo un po’ strano.

Io voglio capire se i voti di Chen sono saliti, sono rimasti stabili o sono scesi. Dovrei usare gli stessi criteri con i due codici di punteggio. Però voglio che le risposte ai miei dubbi vengano dai dati, non dai miei desideri. Perciò anche se con il codice di punteggi +5/-5 Chen ha ottenuto due dei suoi migliori quattro punteggi al Campionato nazionale, ho escluso questi punteggi dalla media, sapendo che in questo modo avrei ottenuto una media più bassa.

Risultato? Fino alla stagione 2017-18, con anche due 4S eseguiti al Campionato nazionale che alzano la percentuale, Chen ha ottenuto il 52,43% del GOE massimo. Dalla stagione 2018-19, escludendo due esecuzioni al Campionato nazionale che avrebbero alzato la media, Chen ha ottenuto il 74,59% del GOE massimo. Non solo il salto di Chen è diventato più stabile. Secondo i giudici è aumentata, e di molto, la qualità che Chen riesce a mettere nelle sue esecuzioni.
