In my check on the elements executed by Nathan Chen I’m now at the 3Lz in combination. I remember that In the first post of the series, dedicated to Hanyu’s 4Lo, I explained how I worked. The following ones were dedicated to the 4S, the 4T in combination, the 4T, the 3A in combination, the 3A, the 3Lz, the 3F, and the 3Lo. When I watched the CCoSp I added some explanations on spins. Later I also looked at the CSSp, and since that spin is part of the short program on Chopin’s Ballade No. 1, in the same post I looked at the marks of that program the times Hanyu completed it without making any mistakes. I wrote also about the FCCoSp, the FCSSp, the FCSp, the StSq and the ChSq1. After checked Hanyu’s elements, I switched do Chen’s elements. First the 4Lz (as a solo jump or as the first jump of a combination), then the 4F in combination, the solo 4F, the 4S, the 4T combinations, the solo 4T and the 3A.
For the last four years I have also been forced to enter one execution at the National Championship, and it is not surprising to see that the highest marks came on that occasion. In my opinion it is also not surprising that the second and third best executions, at least according to the judges, occurred in Skate America, nor that, after the extraordinarily high marks received at the 2019 National Championship, the marks were also very high in the following World Championship or in the World Team Trophy, which Chen entered as the reigning world champion. If you want to know how the National Championship marks could have influenced the World Championship marks, I remind you that there is a thing called the anchoring effect, I wrote about it in this post. And since we’re in the mood for things that aren’t surprising, and since this is the eighthelement I check Chen’s scores, it’s also not surprising to find that Chen’s scores have growth in the past four seasons.

3A is the jump on which Chen struggles the most, it’s no mystery. The mystery is his marks, because according to the judges he has improved to the point of regularly deserving at least a +3 (60.00%), but in his best performances there are always some marks higher than +3, judging by these percentages.
The improvement, 34.55% on the ten best executions, 29.11% on the four best executions, is incredible. And it’s even more incredible if we think that once upon a time the difference between Hanyu’s 3A and Chen’s, but also between Shoma Uno’s 3A and Chen’s, was enormous, while in recent seasons it has almost disappeared.
Truly remarkable, evidently according to the judges the new standard is the backaxel.

Not surprisingly, it was on these two occasions that Chen got his highest scores. In both periods Chen made some mistakes, but overall his scores went up, and they went up regardless of how I look at them: if I look at 10 executions, if I look at only the executions with positive GOE, if I look only at the best 5 international executions (I excluded National Championships and negative GOEs: with the +5/-5 score code I have 5 competitions left, so I averaged the best five competitions even with the +3/-3 score code) or if I only look at the best 4 executions. The judges told us Chen’s 4T has improved.

Chen performed different types of combinations after 4T, and since it is not possible to make a comparison for each type because over time he varied the second part, making it more challenging, I decided to put together all the combinations starting with a 4T. His marks have increased, and by a lot: the best execution of a combination of the 4T with the score code + 3/-3 received a lower evaluation than the tenth execution with the score code + 5/-5. Remarkable.

Notevole.

Chen favors toe assisted jumps. It’s not a criticism, I’m not implying anything with this sentence, I’m just stating a fact. Chen’s worst jump is an edge jump, the axel, and his 3A is pretty ugly. He sometimes did 4Lo, but not that often, while he did quite a lot of 4Lz and 4F. As for the 4S, for a couple of seasons he struggled a lot. In my table there are five executions with positive GOE and five with negative GOE, in three cases even the minimum GOE. Then he stabilized it and his mistakes became much rarer.
With a situation like this, comparing the top ten executions with the +3/-3 scoring system and the +5/-5 scoring system doesn’t make much sense, it is obvious that the marks have gone up. That’s why I prefer to limit myself to looking at the four best performances. With the old score code I also averaged two executions at the National Championship, one of these executions is the one that earned him the highest mark. I usually ignore scores in the National Championship. In this case I did an exception because his executions, especially those with positive GOE, are few. But I made an exception in a bit a strange way.
I want to understand if Chen’s scores have risen, remained stable or dropped. I should use the same criteria with the two score codes. But I want the answers to my doubts to come from data, not from my desires. So even though with the +5/-5 score code Chen had two of his best four scores at the National Championship, I excluded those scores from the average, knowing that this would result in a lower average.
Result? Up to the 2017-18 season, with even two 4S made at the National Championship raising the percentage, Chen achieved 52.43% of the maximum GOE. Since the 2018-19 season, excluding two 4S at the National Championship that would have raised his average, Chen has achieved an average GOE of 74.59%. Not only has Chen’s jump become more stable. According to the judges, the quality that Chen manages to put into his 4S has increased by a lot.

Chen predilige i salti puntati.

I’ll just leave the graph, without a real comment. Whether we look at the best 10 executions or the best 4, Chen’s scores went up, and by a lot. According to the judges, from the 2018-19 season Chen has put much more quality into his 4F.

Chen did more 4F than 4Lz, so I had no problems doing my checks. In fact for the solo 4F I found ten executions with positive GOE in international competitions in both periods, for the combinations I had to put together the double and triple toe loop combinations, and even so I had to enter the table some executions made at the National Championship.
If we look at the average of the top 10 executions, Chen’s score is up 17.43%. If I exclude the National Championship from the check, but also the negative GOE (in the short program of Skate America in 2021 Chen landed badly, made a step out, and by rule the second jump of the combination was excluded from the score. And, always by rule, with an error of this type, in the short program the element must receive a -5, otherwise I think the GOE would have been negative but not that low), the difference is not so big, but Chen’s marks are rose by 15.93%, still a notable growth.
Finally, if I look at the best four executions (note that with the +3/-3 system I used fot the average the score he obtained at the National Championship, the highest evaluation received by Chen in that period, while with the +5 system /-5 I didn’t consider the three evaluations received at the National Championship, which would have raised this last average), the average grew by 5.61%.
Whatever data we look at, according to the judges Chen has improved in executing the 4F in combination, and by a lot.

After the transition from the +3/-5 score code to the +5/-5 score code, Yuzuru Hanyu’s scores dropped. Did the judges downgrade everyone’s marks, or did they downgrade just Hanyu’s? If the first hypothesis is true, it means that they have been more severe. If the second is true, it means that according to them Hanyu has gotten worse. To figure out which hypothesis is true, I checked Nathan Chen’s scores.
In the first post of the series, dedicated to Hanyu’s 4Lo, I explained how I worked. The following ones were dedicated to the 4S, the 4T in combination, the 4T, the 3A in combination, the 3A, the 3Lz, the 3F and the 3Lo.
With Chen I was faced with a curious situation. Until the 2017-18 season he performed the 4Lz+3T combination several times, after which he performed it only three times, one of which in a national championship. There is one less jump element in the free skate, and the Zayak rule has changed. I have transcribed the data, I have also created the graph, but the data is too few to say anything serious.
Given the situation, I switched to 4Lz, and here I found he did only nine 4Lz until the 2017-18 season, and many with fall, as evidenced by the strongly negative GOE.
The growth is remarkable, but looking only at this element to me it seemed unfair toward Chen. This is why I decided to combine the data of the 4Lz and the 4Lz+3T combinations in a single table (Chen performed the 4Lz+2T combination only once, at the Japan Open, a competition that I really can’t consider, and in any case the GOE that received on the occasion was positive but very low).
Combining the two elements, the average score on the top ten executions dropped by more than 7%. This is because up to the 2017-18 season Chen performed the 4Lz, alone or in combination, 25 times, so even though there were many mistakes I was able to choose the best executions. After that, he performed it only 14 times, and since there were some mistakes, the 4Lz of the Skate America 2019 short program, whose GOE is positive but rather low, also entered my table. If instead of that jump I had calculated the average with the 4Lz+3T combination of the 2022 National Championship that we see in the first table, Chen’s average from 61.13% would have risen to 65.98%. But that GOE isn’t the best GOE Chen received. In the free skate of the 2019 National Championship, Chen received a +5.75, 100% GOE, in that of 2022 he received a +5.59, 97.21%, therefore the average mark of the ten best executions would have gone up, not down. If I had looked at the scores of the National Championship up to the 2017-18 season, nothing would have changed in the table, since the highest GOE Chen received is a +1.71 (which corresponds to 57.00%) in the free skate of the national championship 2017, a GOE identical to the lowest among those appearing in the table.
Why this lengthy check on the national championship, when it’s a competition that I hardly ever consider? To say that yes, the average of the ten best executions has dropped, but only because in recent seasons Chen has performed few lutz, and some mediocre executions have also entered the calculation. If we look at the eight best executions, the average would be practically the same, 70.46% until the Pyeongchang season, 70.35% after. And looking at just the top four elements, Chen’s average jumped from 74.25% to 80%, an improvement of 5.75%. So, according to the judges, sometimes Chen made mistakes, but when he skated at his best the quality of his lutz improved.

New post in my check on the best elements performed by Yuzuru Hanyu with the score code +3/-3 and with the score code +5/-5. Last post dedicated to checking the best elements performed by Yuzuru Hanyu with the score code +3/-3 and with the score code +5/-5. At least, last post dedicated solely to Hanyu’s scores. Since in competitions not only the scores obtained by an individual skater count, but also the scores obtained by his opponents, I also looked with the same attention the marks obtained by Chen and, to a lesser extent, also the marks obtained by other skaters. This means that with this type of control I will continue for a while, sometimes even making comparisons between skaters. I dedicated the last post to the StSq.
In the first post of the series, dedicated to the 4Lo, I explained how I worked. The following ones were dedicated to the 4S, the 4T in combination, the 4T, the 3A in combination, the 3A, the 3Lz, the 3F and the 3Lo. After the jumps I watched the spins. When I dealt with the CCoSp I added some explanations on spins. Later I also looked at the CSSp, and since that spin is part of the short program on Chopin’s Ballade No. 1, in the same post I looked at the marks of that program the times Hanyu completed it without making any mistakes. I wrote also about the FCCoSp, the FCSSp and the FCSp.
ChSq1 is part only of the free skate, so I haven’t indicated which program it is. As with the StSq, the drop in scores is around 10%.
The most fascinating vote is the one for the choreographic sequence of SEIMEI. On three occasions with the +3/-3 score code he received 100% GOE, on two other occasions, including the first time he performed it, he received a higher mark than he received at Four Continents Championship 2020. The movements are the same, only performed faster because with the new rules the free skate has been shortened by 30 seconds, and therefore Hanyu has chosen to speed up the music in order not to impoverish the element. Considering that the scores dropped, according to the judges the 2020 Hanyu skated worse than the 2015 Hanyu and also the 2018 Hanyu.

New post in my check on the best elements performed by Yuzuru Hanyu with the score code +3/-3 and with the score code +5/-5. I wrote also about the FCCoSp, the FCSSp and the FCSp.
After checking the spins performed by Hanyu before and after the spring of 2018, I moved on to the step sequence. I recall that until the end of the 2017-18 season the maximum GOE for a level 1, 2 or 3 step sequence was 1.50 points, for a level 4 step sequence it was 2.10 points. From the 2018-19 season, with the GOE parameterized to the base value of the individual elements, it has become 1.65 points for a level 3 step sequence, 1.95 points for a level 4 step sequence. The level 4 step sequence it is the only element that, with the new score code, has seen its GOE go down. But didn’t the ISU want to enhance skating skills? No, maybe not, basically he also removed the request to perform a step in the jump preceded by a stepnot in combination in the short program, so perhaps knowing how to skate has gone out of fashion and is no longer required, nor is it worth enhancing the steps if still someone persists in wanting to do them, or to do them well where they are required (and that the steps are not important was reaffirmed a year ago with the elimination of the step sequence in the junior free skate).
All right. Perhaps the ISU should wonder why there are fewer and fewer spectators at their competitions, but self-criticism is never easy. Let’s go back to Hanyu’s step sequence. I only looked at the ones marked as StSq, so not the CiSt or SlSt he did until the 2011-12 season, when the rules changed. And I looked at the percentage of GOE he received compared to the maximum possible GOE, not the total score he got, which means that some of these step sequences are level 4, some are level 3, and in 2015 there is also a level 2 step sequence. What interests me is the quality. Can Hanyu do the steps well?
According to the judges Hanyu has definitely gotten worse. If with the score code +3/-3 the way he executed the step sequence was judged perfect in eight international competitions, and in two others (actually there are three, 95.24% of the Rostelecom Cup 2017 did not entered my table) he achieved over 95% of the maximum GOE, with the score code +5/-5, his maximum GOE was 91.79%, and only on three other occasions did he achieve over 90 % of maximum GOE (with the previous score code he had succeeded on 17 occasions). And that Hanyu’s scores have dropped like this is a trait of him. I looked at the best four step sequences for 18 skaters, the ones who had enough competitions with both score codes for a comparison to make sense. Only five skaters have seen their scores drop, and Hanyu’s scores are the ones that have dropped the most. I will republish the table with all the data later.

Hanyu sa eseguire bene i passi?
A quanto pare secondo i giudici Hanyu è decisamente peggiorato.
