In my check on the elements executed by Nathan Chen I’m now at the ChSq1. I remember that In the first post of the series, dedicated to Hanyu’s 4Lo, I explained how I worked.The following ones were dedicated to the 4S, the 4T in combination, the 4T, the 3A in combination, the 3A, the 3Lz, the 3F, and the 3Lo. When I watched the CCoSp I added some explanations on spins. Later I also looked at the CSSp, and since that spin is part of the short program on Chopin’s Ballade No. 1, in the same post I looked at the marks of that program the times Hanyu completed it without making any mistakes. I wrote also about the FCCoSp, the FCSSp, the FCSp, the StSq and the ChSq1. After checked Hanyu’s elements, I switched do Chen’s elements. First the 4Lz (as a solo jump or as the first jump of a combination), then the 4F in combination, the solo 4F, the 4S, the 4T combinations, the solo 4T, the 3A and the 3Lz, in combination and as a solo jump. After I watched the CCoSp, the CCSp, the FCCoSp, the FSSp, the FCSp and the StSq.

In this case, Chen’s scores have grown impressively.

As I did for the StSq, I compared Chen’s best ten executions of ChSq1 with Brown, Hanyu and Uno’s best ten executions.

Okay, I have to acknowledge one thing. Unlike what happened with the step sequence, it is not Hanyu the one who received the lowest marks after the 2017-18 season, but Uno. By very little. And it’s not Chen who has received the highest marks, but Brown. However, it is impressive to see how much Chen’s scores have risen, and the deterioration of Hanyu’s scores is also very significant.

And, even for the choreographic sequence, I looked at the best four executions for 18 skaters. As I did for the StSq, I considered the 2020 Cup of China as a national championship and therefore I didn’t consider it. If I had done that, Boyang Jin’s score percentage would have dropped from 66.67% of the old code of points to 63.80%, a drop of 2.87%, not the 8.17% we see in the graph. And the overall average would have increased by 8.16%, not 7.87%.

There are only six skaters who have seen their scores drop (but for Kolyada we could say that they remained stable), while 12 have seen their scores rise. The one who has seen his grades drop the most is Hanyu. I notice that Jason Brown, who was already the skater who received the highest scores, saw his scores go up, so it’s possible that the scores will go up even if they’re already high. I also notice that Brown is exactly 8 days younger than Hanyu, so age has little to do with these scores. As for Keegan Messing, who is older than Hanyu by almost three years, he has had impressive growth, surpassed only by that of Chen and Rizzo, and, according to the judges, has become better than Hanyu.

Again I excluded the skaters who have never participated in the Olympic Games or the Grand Prix Final and redid the graph.

Looking only at the best skaters, it is even more evident that according to the judges almost all of the skaters improved while Hanyu got worse, with two skaters passing him and all the others coming closer to him.

Nel mio controllo sugli elementi eseguiti da Nathan Chen sono arrivata alla sequenza coreografica. Ricordo che ho spiegato il modo in cui ho lavorato nel primo post della serie, quello dedicato al 4Lo di Yhzuru Hanyu. In seguito ho guardato i voti del 4S, del 4T in combinazione, del 4T, del 3A in combinazione, del 3A, del 3Lz, del 3F e del 3Lo. Quando mi sono occupata della CCoSp ho aggiunto qualche spiegazione sulle trottole. In seguito ho guardato anche la CSSp, e visto che quella trottola fa parte del programma corto sulla Ballata N. 1 di Chopin, ho guardato i voti di quel programma le volte in cui Hanyu lo ha completato senza commettere errori. In seguito ho guardato la FCCoSp, la FCSSp, la FCSp, la StSq e la ChSq1. Dopo aver finito con Hanyu sono passata agli elementi eseguiti da Nathan Chen, a partire dal 4Lz (da solo o in combinazione) e proseguendo con il 4F in combinazione, il 4F da solo, il 4S, il 4T in combinazione, il 4T da solo, il 3A e il 3Lz, in combinazione e da solo. In seguito ho guardato la CCoSp, la CCSp, la FCCoSp, la FSSp, la FCSp e la StSq.

In questo caso i voti di Chen sono cresciuti in modo impressionante.

Come ho fatto per la StSq, ho confrontato le dieci migliori esecuzioni della ChSq1 da parte di Chen con le dieci migliori esecuzioni da parte di Brown, Hanyu e Uno.

Ok, devo riconoscere una cosa. A differenza di quanto avvenuto con la sequenza di passi. non è Hanyu quello che dopo la stagione 2017-18 ha ricevuto i voti più bassi, ma Uno. Di pochissimo. E non è Chen quello che ha ricevuto i voti più alti, ma Brown. Fa comunque impressione vedere di quanto sono saliti i voti di Chen, ed è molto significativo anche il peggioramento dei voti di Hanyu.

E, anche per la sequenza coreografica, ho guardato le migliori quattro esecuzioni per 18 pattinatori. Come ho fatto per la StSq, ho considerato la Cup of China 2020 alla stregua di un campionato nazionale e quindi non l’ho considerata. Se lo avessi fatto, la percentuale di voti di Boyang Jin sarebbe scesa dal 66,67% del vecchio codice di punteggi al 63,80%, un calo del 2,87%, non di quel 8,17% che vediamo nel grafico. E la media complessiva sarebbe aumentata dell’8,16%, non del 7,87%.

Sono solo sei pattinatori quelli che hanno visto i loro voti abbassarsi (ma per Kolyada potremmo dire che è rimasto stabile), mentre 12 hanno visto i loro voti alzarsi. Quello che ha visto i suoi voti abbassarsi di più è Hanyu. Noto che Jason Brown, che già era il pattinatore che aveva ricevuto i voti più alti, ha visto i suoi voti alzarsi, quindi è possibile che i voti si alzino anche se sono già alti. Noto anche che Brown è più giovane di Hanyu esattamente di 8 giorni, quindi l’età ha poco a che vedere con questi voti. Quanto a Keegan Messing, che è più grande di Hanyu di quasi tre anni, ha avuto una crescita impressionante, superato solo da Chen e Rizzo, e, secondo i giudici, è diventato più bravo di Hanyu.

Anche in questo caso ho escluso i pattinatori che non hanno mai partecipato ai Giochi olimpici o alla finale di Grand Prix e ho rifatto il grafico.

Guardando solo i migliori, è ancora più evidente che secondo i giudici la quasi totalità dei pattinatori è migliorata mentre Hanyu è peggiorato, con due pattinatori che lo hanno superato e tutti gli altri che gli si sono molto avvicinati.
